국문 초록

본 연구는 학습자의 전인적 발달을 지향하는 학습원리의 중요한 역사적 사례로서 퇴계의 마음공부(心學)의 성격을 밝히는 것에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 퇴계의 대표 저작인 『성학십도(聖學十圖)』를 중심 자료로 활용하여, 그 안에서 제시되는 학습의 원리로서 마음공부의 의미를 해석하였다. 먼저, 퇴계는 학습의 과정에서 마음(心)을 중심에 위치시킴으로써 존재론적 차원에서 학습이 이루어지도록 하고 있음을 확인하였다. 마음은 사유하고 느끼는 지각의 작용을 하며, 마음의 지각은 인간의 형이상학적 본성을 지각하는 것에 초점을 두고 있다. 다음으로, 퇴계는 학습의 관점에서 배움(學)이 내포하는 실천적 성격에 주목함으로써 실제적인 삶의 차원에서 학습이 이루어지도록 하고 있음을 확인하였다. 배움은 현실의 삶에서 실천으로 드러나는 것에 의미를 두고 있으며, 이러한 실천은 인간의 본성을 온전하게 실현하는 것에 초점을 두고 있다. 즉, 마음공부란 학습자가 자신의 형이상학적 본성을 지각하고 이를 실현함으로써 자신을 전인적으로 완성해나가는 학습의 원리이다. 이러한 연구의 결과는 우리의 교육에서 학습이 단지 인식론적 차원이 아닌 존재론적 차원의 바탕에서 이루어져야 함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of Toegye s heart-mind discipline as an important historical case of the learning principle aimed at a holistic education. For this purpose, this study interpreted the heart-mind discipline as the principle of learning presented in Toegye s magnum opus, The Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning, as the primary data. First, it was confirmed that Toegye placed the heart-mind at the center in the process of learning so that learning proceeds in the ontological dimension. The heart-mind acts as a way of thinking and feeling perception, and the heart-mind s perception focuses on the perception of human metaphysical nature. Next, it was confirmed that Toegye focused on the practical nature of discipline in terms of learning, so that learning was carried out in a practical life dimension. Discipline has meaning in what is revealed as practice in real life, and this practice focuses on realizing the human nature to the full. In conclusion, the heart-mind discipline is a principle of learning in which learners perceive their metaphysical nature and realize them to complete themselves holistically. The results of this study suggest that learning in our education should be based on the ontological dimension, not just the epistemological dimension.
