대학 글쓰기에서의 (학술적) 에세이 쓰기의 효과와 의미

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 대학 글쓰기에서의 학술적 에세이 쓰기의 효과와 의미를 살펴보는 데 있다. 대학 신입생들이 글쓰기에 흥미를 되찾고 글이 갖고 있는 힘을 경험케 하는 글의 장르로서 학술적 에세이 쓰기를 제안한 글이기도 하다. 인문교양교육의 하나인 대학 글쓰기에서 논증적 글쓰기만이 학술적 글쓰기로서 강조될 필요는 없다. 정서와 감정을 자유롭게 표출하면서도 학술적 글쓰기로서의 논리성 역시 담보할 수 있는 글의 장르인 학술적 에세이가 학생들에게 유의미한 경험을 제공할 수 있다. 이 논의는 실제 수업에 대한 경험을 토대로 작성된 것으로, 학술적 에세이의 개념에 관해서도 학생들의 질문에 입각하여 논리적 글쓰기와의 차별성을 설명하는 것에서부터 개념의 범주에 접근하였다. 학술적 에세이에서는 논증적(논리적) 글쓰기에서 배제되었던 <나>를 자유롭게 드러낼 수 있다는 것이 중요한 요소이다. 논증적 글쓰기에서 배제되었던 <나>의 활용이 글쓰기 과정에서 유의미하게 드러날 수 있다는 점에서 학술적 에세이는 글쓰기 수업에서 학생들이 경험하는 소외를 넘어설 수 있는 조건을 갖고 있기도 하다. 요컨대 학술적 에세이의 장르적 조건은 논증적 글쓰기와 다르게 <나>의 드러냄의 자유로움에 있는 것으로 이것은 <독창성>을 이끌 수 있는 대체불가능성의 방법적 조건을 내포하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 글이라는 장르가 갖고 있는 보편성의 장 안에서 자신의 경험과, 감정, 정서 등이 글의 중요한 요소가 될 수 있다는 긍정적 경험의 장을 제공한다. 독창성이 드러날 수 있는 글의 장르를 제공함으로써 학생의 개성과 창의성 역시 계발될 수 있음은 물론이다. 한편 학술적 에세이 쓰기의 실제 지도법에서 과도한 주관성에 대한 노출의 경계 및 공공적 의미를 갖게 하는 학술적 요소에 대해서는 교수자의 성실한 점검이 필수적이다.

영문 초록

This study is designed to explore the effectiveness and implications of academic essay writing in writing courses at college. In addition, writing of academic essays is proposed, in this study, as a genre to enable college freshmen to recover their interests in writing and to experience the power of writing. There is no reason to emphasize only logical wiring as academic writing in terms of college writing program, which is one of liberal arts and humanistic education. Academic essay is able to provide cherishable experiences to students in that it allows them to express their emotions and feelings freely and to secure logic required by academic writing. This study is based on experiences of actual classes. Likewise, as for the perception of academic essay, students raised questions first and then listened to the explanations on what difference it has from the logical writing- which was the way to approach the conceptual scope of academic essay. In case of academic essay, I (which is excluded form logical writing) can be freely exposed, working as the significant element of academic essay. As a matter of fact, academic essay writing has the conditions which help students overcome alienation that students can experience in writing classes, in that the usage of I (which is ignored by logical writing) can be considerably meaningful. In other words, the genre properties of academic essay is to show I freely, different from logical wiring, which implies irreplaceable methodological conditions required to realize originality and also provides positive experiences because students can understand their experiences feelings, and emotions can be important materials for writing in the boundary of universality which the writing (a genre) has. It s also true that students can develop their personality and creativity when they are exposed to the writing genre to unveil their originality. Meanwhile, when it comes to the actual teaching on how to write academic essay, a teacher essentially needs to take precautions against the exposure to excessive subjectivity to pay attention to academic factors which make a writing public implication.
