『長老敎會婚喪禮式書』(1924/1925)를 통해서 본 혼례문화와 현재적 함의

국문 초록

이 연구에서는 1924년과 1925년에 조선예수교장로회에서 간행한 『長老敎會婚喪禮式書』의 혼례예식을 분석함으로써 당시 한국교회에서 행했던 혼례문화를 고찰했다. 첫째, 이 혼례예식서에서는 하나님의 인간창조 사역, 엄격한 일부일처제 결혼, 아담의 원죄, 이로 인해 야기된 죽음의 징벌, 예수 그리스도의 대속의 죽으심과 부활, 구원과 미래적 소망에 관한 신실한 언약을 강조했다. 둘째, 혼례예식에 규정된 조례에서 예식은 철저하게 개혁주의 신학 관점에서 성경적 기독교예식에 준해야 한다는 점을 천명했다. 이 혼례예식서에서는 복장에 관한 사안을 아디아포라의 관점에서 이해하여 수용함으로써 혼례식에 실용적 편의를 도모했다. 셋째, 혼례예식에서 착용해야 할 복장에 관한 규례는 토착화차원에서 한국인의 내면적인 심성을 충분하게 고려해야 한다는 입장을 취하여 전례(傳禮) 예복도 허용함으로써 매우 포용적이고 실용적인 예법을 반영하고자 했다. 넷째, 혼례예식 순서절차는 성경적 원리에 입각하여 개식(신랑신부 입장), 찬송(혼례), 기도, 식사, 성경낭독, 설명(설교와 문사의 내용), 서약, 신물(信物)증여, 기도와 공고, 광고, 찬송(송영과 예배), 축복(축도), 증서교환 및 폐식 등 모두 13단계로 편성되었다. 다섯째, 『長老敎會婚喪禮式書』가 제시한 교훈에 비추어 볼 때 향후 기독교 결혼예식에 있어 성경적 활성화를 도모하기 위해서는 법적인 서류들과 이와 관련된 문서들을 선행적으로 검토하는 작업, 메시지를 충분하게 전할 수 있는 시간적인 여유, 내빈들을 향한 신중한 문사(問辭), 신랑신부가 반복적으로 서약하는 절차, 결혼증서 교환 등 솔선해야 할 중요한 과제들이 산적해있다.

영문 초록

In this study, I have analyzed the wedding worship service from Forms of Marriage and Burial published by the Choseon Presbyterian Church in 1924 and 1925 in order to explore the cultural aspects of wedding ceremony from Korean Churches at the time. Firstly, this literature put an emphasis on: God’s human creation, strict monogamous marriage, Adam’s original sin and the punishment of death, the substitutionary death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the sincere promise of salvation and futuristic hope. Secondly, this ritual’s ordinances clarified that wedding ceremony should be part of a biblical Christian ceremony from the view of Reformed Theology. Thirdly, the wedding garment put into a sufficient consideration the Korean afferents in level with indigenization. The literature had put into regard the adiaphora issue promoting the practical convenience of wedding ceremony. Fourthly, the wedding worship service was arranged in 13 stages on the basis of biblical principles such as opening(groom march & bride march), hymn(wedding), prayer, opening ceremony, scripture reading, explanation(sermon and question to the guests), vows, exchange of rings, prayer and declaration of marriage, advertisement, hymn(doxology and worship), benediction, certificate exchange and closing, and so on. Fifthly, these results suggest that in order to promote biblical Christian wedding worship service, there are important assignments accumulated that we need to work on from the perspective of the lessons in Forms of Marriage and Burial such as advance review of legal and other relevant documents, plenty of time for sermon, prudent question to the guests, repeated vows of the bride and groom, certificate exchange, and so forth.
