국문 초록

탐험적, 활용적 혁신활동을 균형 있게 추구할 수 있는 양면형 기술혁신이 주요 연구주제로 대두되고 있고 두 가지 기술혁신 활동을 적절히 모두 추진할 수 있는 양면성(Ambidexterity)을 갖춘 기업의 혁신성과가 높다는 것은 일반적으로 인정되고는 있다. 그러나 자원 제약이 큰 중소기업의 경우 양면형 기술혁신이란 어떤 의미를 가지는지, 어떻게 상호 모순되는 두 가지 기술혁신활동을 적절히 균형을 유지할 것인가의 문제에 대한 고찰은 부족한 것으로 보인다. 본 연구는 March(1991) 이후의 탐험(exploration)과 활용(exploitation) 관점에서 기술혁신(technological innovation)에 대한 그 간의 연구동향을 고찰하여 중소기업에게 적합한 기술혁신의 개념을 정의해 보고자 한다. 그 다음으로 기술혁신에서 양면성 추구의 요인과 성과에 대한 연구결과를 고찰하면서 중소기업 입장에서 양면형 기술혁신의 성공요인을 밝히고자 한다. 연구결과 대기업에 비해 중소기업은 상충관계에 있는 탐험과 활용 활동 간의 균형과 이를 위한 조정 매카니즘이 더욱 중요함을 제시하였다. 또한 본 논문을 통해 밝혀낸 문제점들을 바탕으로 중소기업의 양면형 기술혁신에 관한 미래 연구를 위한 방향성을 제시하고자 하였다

영문 초록

Balancing explorative and exploitative innovation ambidextrously has emerged as one of the foremost questions in technological innovation research. While a firm’s ability to jointly pursue both an exploitative and exploratory orientation has been posited as having positive performance effects, little is currently known about the antecedents and consequences of such ambidexterity in small-and-medium sized firms(SMEs). This paper focuses on the interpretation of exploration and exploitation in the literature on technological innovation, and understanding of how technological ambidexterity can be achieved, particularly so in SMEs. In this study, we briefly review the current state of the research, highlighting what we know and don’t know about the topic. Furthermore, we investigate the determinants which is essential to attaining technological ambidexterity in SMEs. and the mediation effect of coordination mechanism between structural, contextual, and leadership characteristics on SME technological ambidexterity. Through this richer explanation, we contribute to a better understanding of how SMEs may effectively pursue exploration and exploitation simultaneously to achieve technological ambidexterity. Basing on those findings, this study suggests the important issues on exploration and exploitation studies and the guidelines for future empirical studies.
