국문 초록

기업의 수익성은 장기적인 관점에서 기업의 생존 및 성공에 중요한 요인일 뿐만 아니라, 이는 경제적 성장, 고용, 혁신, 기술적 변화 등 국가 경제에도 큰 영향을 미친다. 하지만, 많은 벤처기업들은 수익성 확보에 어려움을 겪고 있는 실정임에도 불구하고, 벤처기업의 수익성 결정 요소에 대한 실증적 결과들이 학문적으로 제대로 정립되지 못하였었다. 본 연구의 목적은 벤처기업 수익성 결정 요인을 밝히는 데 있다. 자원기반이론에 기반하여, 본 연구는 중소벤치기업부와 벤처기업현회가 실시한 2019년 벤처기업정밀실태조사 데이터 중 서울 및 경기 지역에 소재한 업력 3년을 초과하는 1,322개 법인에 대한 데이터를 사용하였다. 회귀분석을 통해, 기업 규모, 기업 성장성, 기업 생산성, 전기 수익성, 그리고 기업 업력 및 기업 수명 주기 단계가 벤처기업 수익성에 미치는 영향을 밝혔다. 본 연구 결과는 벤처기업 경영자와 투자자 및 정책입안자들이 기업의 외형적 규모 늘리기를 지양하고, 지속가능한 생존 및 성장 방안을 모색할 필요가 있음을 시사한다. 특히, 벤처기업의 기업 수명 주기 단계는 기업 생산성(인당 영업이익)이라는 매개변수를 통하여 기업 수익성에 영향을 미치기 때문에, 벤처기업의 경영자와 마케터들은 자사의 상품이나 서비스의 포트폴리오의 수명 주기를 체계적 관리하는 것이 필요하다. 또한, 정책입안자들은 벤처기업의 설립 환경 조성 뿐 만 아니라 국가적 관점에서 벤처기업 수명 주기의 포트폴리오 관리에 대해서도 점검할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Firms’ profitability is not only important for survival and success of firms from a long-term perspective, but also has important impacts on a country’s economy including economic growth, employment, innovation, technological changes, and so. However, while many startups have difficulties in acquiring solid profitability, academic results regarding the determinants of startup profitability have not been empirically established. The objective of this research is to examine the determinants of startup profitability. Based on resource-based view, this research analyzed 1,322 startups, which are located in Seoul and Kyunggi area and have over 3 years business history, from 2019 Survey of Korean Startups by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups of Korea and Korea Venture Business Association. This study investigated the impact of firm size, firm growth, firm productivity, lagged profitability, firm age, and firm’s life cycle on startup profitability. The results suggest that startup entrepreneurs, investors, and policy makers need to avoid unsubstantial growth and find solutions for sustainable survival and growth. Especially, as the life cycle of startup firms has a significant effect on the firms’ profitability through the firm productivity (firms’ operating profit per capita), which is a mediator, managements and marketers of startups need to strategically manage the product life cycle of their product/service portfolio. In addition, policy makers need to not only encourage startups but also manage the product life cycle in terms of nationwide startup portfolio.
