국문 초록

이 연구는 『마녀의 아들』(2003)이 어떻게 1990년대 일본사회에서 성소수자를 향한 은폐된 억압을 가시화하고 소수자의 연대 가능성을 구축하는지 분석한다. 1980년대의 소위 ‘에이즈 패닉’ 이후 일본사회에서 에이즈는 성소수자, 그중에서도 특히 게이의 문란한 성생활에 대한 ‘징벌’이라는 이미지를 형성하게 되었다. 『마녀의 아들』의 주인공 가즈노리는 이러한 일본사회의 호모포비아 담론을 내재화함으로써 에이즈 감염의 공포를 인식하면서도 무모한 성행위를 반복하며 자기혐오의 연쇄에 빠진다. 그는 가정에서도 폭력적인 아버지를 향한 양가감정을 경험한다. 아버지의 사후 형은 독립하여 ‘정상가족’을 형성하지만, 이윽고 그는 이 ‘정상가족’이 사실은 기만적인 것임을 깨닫는다. 그는 결국 가부장제에서 벗어나려는 어머니의 아들이기를 선택함으로써 사회와 가족과의 관계성을 재구성하고, 같은 성소수자를 향한 공감과 이해를 선택함으로써 연대의 가능성으로 나아간다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how The Witch’s Son(2003) visualizes concealed oppression against sexual minorities in Japanese society in the 1990s and builds the possibility of solidarity with other minorities. Since the so-called AIDS panic of the 1980s, HIV/AIDS in the Japanese society has formed the image of “punishment” for sexual minorities, especially gay sexuality. Kazunori, the protagonist of The Witch’s Son, internalizes the Homophobia discourse in the Japanese society, recognizing the fear of HIV/AIDS infection, but repeats reckless sexual intercourse and falls into a chain of self-loathing. He experiences ambivalent feelings toward his violent father because of his gay identity. After his father’s death, his older brother forms a ‘normal family’, but soon he realizes that this ‘normal family’ is actually deceptive. As the son of his mother who is trying to escape the patriarchal system, he eventually advances to the possibility of solidarity by restructuring his relationship with society and family and choosing empathy and understanding with other sexual minorities.
