Halakhic Controversy as Famly Quarrel: Re-Considering Jesus’ Hand Washing Debate with the Pharasees in Matthew 15:1-20

국문 초록

정결에 관한 예수의 입장은, 유대교를 향한 예수의 태도를 이해할 수 있는 매우 흥미로운, 그러나 동시에 복잡한 주제이다. 정결 규례에 관해 당시 유대지도자들과 충돌하는 예수의 모습은, 그가 전통적 정결 규례를 버리고, 이를 자신의 정결 규례로 대체하고자 한 것으로 보이게 만든다. 이 때문에, 일부 초기 교회 교부들은, 예수가 정결에 관해 유대적 전통을 거부하고, 그 자리를 새롭게 기독교적 규례로 대신하게 하고자 한 것으로 이해하기도 했다. 본 연구는 마태복음 15:1-20절에 나타난 손 씻기 규례에 관한 예수의 해석을 살펴보고 바리새인들의 견해와 충돌했던 예수의 모습이 나타내는 의미에 관해 설명한다. 그리고 손 씻기 규례에 관한 예수의 이해 중, 마태가 부각시키고자 했던 것은 무엇이었으며, 이를 자신의 공동체의 가치와 정체성을 드러내는데 어떻게 활용하고 있는지에 관해 이야기한다. 이를 바탕으로, 필자는 마태복음의 손 씻는 규례에 관한 논증은, 예수가 유대적 전통을 전체를 통틀어 거부하는 것이 아닌, 오히려 이를 바르게 해석하고자 한 것임을 논증한다. 마태복음 15:1-20절을 동일한 사건을 기록하고 있는 마가복음 7:1-23절과 비교함과 동시에 고대 유대문헌들에 소개된 정결에 대한 견해들을 살펴봄으로써, 예수의 공격은 불특정 다수로서 유대인들 전체가 아니라, 그 전통을 잘못 해석, 전달, 행동하고 있는 종교 지도자들, 그리고 그들로 대표되는 바리새인들을 향한 것이었음을 발견할 수 있다. 따라서 예수와 유대 종교 지도자 간의 정결 규례에 관한 충돌은, 비록 예수의 견해가 유대 지도자와는 구별되지만, 다른 두 개의 종교의 충돌이기 전에, 여전히 이스라엘의 자손으로서의 한 유대 공동체 내에서의 “가족논쟁”이었임을 보여준다. 그러나 동시에 마태복음의 저자는 이 정결규례에 관한 논의를 통해, 자신의 공동체는 진정한 권위를 갖으신 예수에 의해 더 발전되고 완성된 하나님의 규례와 그의 법을 지키며, 기존의 유대 공동체와는 구별되는 정체성을 가졌음을 드러내고자 했음을 본 연구는 제안한다.

영문 초록

Jesus’ attitude towards purity is one of the most intriguing and complicated issues in understanding Jesus’ attitude towards Judaism. The difficulty of understanding Jesus’ attitude stems from his granting legitimacy to impure people - a decision that conflicts with Jesus’ contemporary authorities. It seems, therefore, that Jesus replaces the traditional understanding of purity with his own understanding thereof. This paper examines Jesus’ treatment of purity and impurity, in particular the hand washing controversy in Matthew 15:1-20. The debate over hand washing before meals demonstrates that Matthew regards his community as a Jewish group distinguished by believing in Jesus as Messiah but that still identifies as a part of Israel by engaging in the development of interpretation of a biblical law and by articulating a unique moral vision. Thus, this research focuses on revealing Jesus’ understanding of purity in opposition to the Pharisees’ view thereof, as well as how the author illuminates Matthean Jesus’ attitude towards purity and the Matthean community’s morality. While analyzing Matt 15:1-20 in terms of Matthean Jesus’ interpretation of purity, I show how the Gospel of Matthew utilize the matter of purity to articulate his comprehension of Jesus and to make a group distinct in terms of its contemporary halakhic interpretations. In conclusion, Matthew’s interpretation of the purity custom will provide us with a clearer understanding of who Matthean Jesus was and what he asserted as well as the moral virtue of his communal identity.
