국문 초록

이 글은 북한 이탈여성이 ‘북한 말투’를 감추거나 바꾸어 표준어를 사용하는 행위의 의미를 분단체제의 젠더화된 국가 정체성 맥락에서 분석했다. 북한 이탈여성에 대한 심층면접 결과, 북한 말투는 북한이라는 출신 국가와 직결된 아비투스로 한국 사람과 구별되는 ‘열등함’을 상징한다. 분단체제인 한국 사회에서 북한의 장소적 의미는 근대 국가공간 구성 과정에서 억압되고 타자화되는 속성이다. 북한 이탈여성들의 표준어 수행은 한국사회의 성별, 연령 등 억압 체계와 맞물려 쉽게 달성되기 어렵고, 북한 말투는 교정되었다 해도 불쑥 드러나는 신체화된 차이로 보존된다. 이러한 북한 이탈여성들의 언어수행은 남한 사회의 규범적 국가 공간에 갈등과 균열을 일으켜 차이의 정치를 확장할 가능성을 제공한다.

영문 초록

This articles aims to explore the cultural meanings, through the analysis on the experiences of language use of North Korean women defectors in South Korea. In order to analyze specific circumstance with regard to language use, speakers emotions and the societal and cultural meaning, the in-depth interviews with the North Korean women defectors were conducted. North Korean women defectors could be considered to become members having linguistic habitus of the North Korean society in the South Korean society. North Korean speech style, connected to their identities as the people from North Korea , is a cultural indicator distinctive from South Koreans, and a kind of symbolic capital presenting their class status in the South Korean society. For the participants in this study, speaking the Standard Language is a part of doing gendered labor, and linked to their intention of becoming the middle class mother in South Korea. In their lives, both Munhwaeo and Standard Language are used switching, and they are linguistic identities chosen and practiced in the interactions with the South Korean society, where they chose to live.
