영문 초록

During the past decades, both the Korean and Chinese governments have continuously liberalized their policies and attitudes toward FDI in order to effectively induce foreign capital and thereby achieve their economic development. In line with the simplification of investment procedures, both governments have removed various restrictions and regulations regarding investment areas, foreign ownership, and profit repatriations, etc. At the sometime, both governments have provided a set of various financial and non-financial incentives for FDI. However, the determinants of FDI in two countries are different of each other. In Korea, the most important determinants are GDP and wages. While the growing GDP with economic development positively contributes to the inducement of FDI, the rapid increases in wages negatively contributes to the inflows of FDI. The rigid adjustment of exchange rates also makes a negative contribution to the inflows of FDI. However, domestic interest rates and dummy variable are not statistically significant in inducing FDI in Korea. By contrast, the most important determinants of FDI in China are the huge size of domestic market, rapid economic growth, and cheap wages. A continuous devaluation of domestic currency and a high rate of tariff compared to other countries are also important factors in inducing export-oriented FDI in China. However, like Korea, domestic interest rates, amount of imports, and dummy variable are not statistically significant.
