영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to estimate south Korean People s willingness to pay for unification and investigate it;s determinants. Data used in this study is Korean Household panel Study conducted by Daewoo economic research institute. This is a survey of 4,547 household and 10,460 household members over 18 year of age from 1993 to 1998 The major findings are as follows. 1. Average annual WTP for unification is 16,472 won in 1996 and reduced to 12,447 won in 1998. Total amount that all the people are willing to pay for unification annually is 741.2 billion won in 1998 and 560.1 billion won in 1996. This is far less than unification cost that most empirical results have estimated. 2. Peoples with different levels of education are different on their willingness to pay. Peoples with more education are found to be more likely to pay than less educated. 3. Age variable has a positive sign and statistically significant in both years. This can be interpreted reflecting that growing older, one feel more national homogeneity. 4. In 1996 WTP of male is more than that of female but differences of WTP between male and female are not found in 1998. This may reflect that man has been comparatively more shocked by 1997 economic crisis than woman. 5. Differences in WTP among unemployed, irregular workers and self employed can t be found. In contrast, salary earner s WTP is substantially less than those of others in both years. 6. WTP of 5 large city residents is not different to that of town(EUP) and subcounty(Myun) residents. Seoul residents, on the other hand, are willing to pay significantly less money than other area residents. 7. Coefficient of income and satisfaction variable in both years show positive signs and statistically significant.
