The Effect of International Outsourcing on Manufacturing Employment

국문 초록

본 논문은 산업별 총 수출에서 해외창출 부가가치가 차지하는 비중으로 측정되는 한국의 국제 아웃소싱이 한국 제조업 부문 기업의 고용에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 면밀하게 분석하고자 한다. 2000년에서 2009년 사이 OECD/WTO의 부가가치 기준 무역자료와 한국 기업수준 고용자료를 연계하여 분석한 결과, 국제 아웃소싱이 한국의 노동집약산업 부문에서 국내 고용에 통계적으로 유의한 수준에서 부정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 반면에, 국제 아웃소싱이 한국의 국내 고용에 미치는 영향은 제조업의 각 산업별 기술집약도에 따라 다르게 나타난다. 이와 같은 실증분석 결과는 기업의 국제 아웃소싱 결정에 대한 모기업 집약도 및 동일한 산업내 기업의 이질성의 역할 등을 모두 고려하고, 아울러 한국의 부가가치 교역대상국을 전세계 대상에서 동북아, 동남아, 유럽, 북아메리카 지역 등 양자 간 교역으로 확장하여 추정한 경우에도 강건한 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

Using the OECD/WTO trade-in-value-added (TiVA) statistics and Korean firms’ employment data in the period from 2000 to 2009, this paper examines the extent to which international outsourcing at the industry level affects domestic employment in Korean manufacturing sectors. It finds that international outsourcing leads to declines in Korean domestic employment at labor intensive industries and increases in Korean domestic employment at technology intensive industries, even after controlling the effects of within-industries firm heterogeneity and headquarters intensity. Alternative sample of Korean bilateral value-added trade with Asia, Europe and North America also confirm the positive productivity effect of international outsourcing in the technology-intensive sector. Empirical findings suggest that technology intensity was a significant factor on international outsourcing that affected Korean domestic employment in the 2000s.
