국문 초록

본 연구에서는 중국 내 각 성에 진출한 외국계 은행 점포수를 국가별로 파악한 성별⋅국가별 외국계 은행 점포수에 대한 자료를 구축하고, 이를 이용하여외국계 은행의 중국 진출 결정요인과 특성을 분석했다. 패널토빗 모형의 추정결과는 외국계 은행의 중국 진출은 각 지역에 진출한 자국 기업에 금융서비스를 제공하기 위한 목적뿐만 아니라 해당 지역 내 중국 기업이나 개인 고객을대상으로 예금과 대출을 취급하는 지역 영업을 목적으로도 이루어짐을 보여 준다. 이에 더하여 해당 지역에 진출한 외국계 은행이 많을수록 다른 외국계 은행의 진출을 촉진시키는 집적효과도 존재한다. 국가별 특성으로는 국내총생산규모가 크고 국제금융센터를 보유한 국가와 대중화권 국가, 그리고 중국과의거리가 가까운 국가가 은행의 중국 진출이 활발한 것으로 나타났다. 한편 본 연구에서는 개별 자료를 바탕으로 국가별 은행들의 중국 진출 행태를 살펴보았는데, 중국에 적극적으로 진출하고 있는 영국계 및 홍콩계 은행의경우 철저하게 자신이 익숙한 지역에 영업기반을 마련하는 선택적 전략을 구사하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 국가들의 진출 행태에 비추어 볼 때 우리나라 은행들도 중국 진출에 있어서 선택과 집중이 필요함을 알 수 있다. 즉우리 은행들의 강점이 무엇인지를 파악하고 이러한 강점이 적용될 수 있는 지역이 어느 곳인지를 판단하여 보다 세밀하고 차별화된 영업 전략을 구사하여야할 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

We construct a data set on the locational distribution of foreign banks’ branches in China classified by Chinese provinces and home countries. Using this data, we analyze the factors and the characteristics of foreign banks’ entry into China. Estimating the Panel Tobit model, we find that foreign banks’ entry into China is not only motivated by providing financial services to their customer companies that enter China, but also by taking advantage of local business opportunities of handling deposits and loans to Chinese companies or individuals in Chinese provinces. In addition, we find that the agglomeration effect is at work in the sense that higher intensity of foreign banks in a region tends to attract more foreign banks into the region. As for the characteristics of the home countries whose banks are active in China, they tend to have a large gross domestic product, have international financial centers, and are close to China in terms of ethnicity and culture. In this study, we looked at the entry behavior of foreign banks in China using the individual data. In the case of UK and Hong Kong banks, which are actively entering into China, they use the strategy that they open branches in their thoroughly familiar provinces. In the light of these countries’ entry behavior, Korean banks also need to choose and concentrate on their strategic area in China. In other words, it is necessary to understand what the strengths of Korean banks are and to judge the area where these strengths can be applied to make a more detailed and differentiated business strategy.
