어기 개념의 고찰

국문 초록

본고에서는 형태론 논의에서 사용되는 어기의 개념에 대해 연구사적으로 검토하고, 그와 관련된 쟁점들을 논의하였다. 어기의 개념을 1) 형태론적 조작의 대상으로서의 어기, 2) 단어 형성의 대상으로서 어기, 3) 조선어학계의 어기, 4) 음운론적인 단독형으로서의 어기의 네 가지로 크게 나누고, 각각의 용법을 확인하였다. 네 가지의 어기는 독자적인 쓰임의 폭을 가지고 있으며, 서로 지칭하는 대상이 조금씩 서로 합치할 수 없는 개념이었다. 단어 형성의 측면에서 어기라는 개념을 사용하는 것이 유용하며, 어근과 어간은 분석의 측면을 잘 드러내는 것으로, 어기와는 사용역이 다름을 논의하였다. 일본의 조선어학계에서 사용하는 어기의 개념도 검토하였다. 조선어학계의 어기는 어미를 고정시켜 기술의 일관성을 담보한다는 장점은 있으나, 어간과 어미의 결합 시 일어나는 통·공시적 과정들을 합리적으로 포착하지 못한다는 단점을 가지고 있음을 밝혔다. 마지막으로 음운론적인 단독형을 의미하는 어기는 유추 현상과 밀접한 관련이 있고, 형태론적 단어 형성과는 성격을 달리하므로 어기라는 용어보다는 기본형이라는 용어가 더 적절하다는 점을 논의하였다. 한국어의 체언과 용언은 기본형이 다르기 때문에 동일한 음운론적 기술 방법을 적용하여 논의하는 것이 내포할 수 있는 잠재적 문제를 제기하였다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the notion of the BASE in morphology and discusses the issues associated with it. I broadly divide the BASE into four types: 1) BASE as an object of morphological processes, 2) BASE as an object of word-formation processes, 3) BASE as used in Korean linguistics society in Japan and 4) BASE as a free-standing output form, and investigate their range of use. The four BASEs have their range of use, and the objects that they refer to are different, they do not seem to converge in the same notion. I also argue that the register between the BASE versus the ROOT and the STEM is distinct in that it is useful to use the former in terms of the word-formation process, whereas the latter is advantageous in terms of word constituent analysis. In turn, the notion of the BASE used among Japanese scholars is investigated. I argue that their BASE is beneficial in consistently describing Korean verbal paradigms, but, contrary to Japanese linguists’ claim, it cannot correctly capture the diachronic and synchronic morphophonological processes when a stem and an affix are combined. Lastly, I suggest that it is more appropriate to use the term BASE FORM, instead of the BASE when referring to a free-standing output form because it is closely related to analogical changes and is different from the BASE in morphological word-formation. Since the BASE FORM of a Korean noun paradigm and a verbal paradigm are different, I raise the potential problem that the same method is used in determining the underlying form of the both.
