국문 초록

외국인투자기업은 양질의 일자리를 창출하는 등 우리 경제에 중요한 역할을 수행하고 있다. 이러한 이유 때문에 투자유치를 위한 다양한 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 그러나, 투자 확대를 모색하기 위해서는 새로운 투자뿐만 아니라, 기존의 외국인투자기업 및 철수한 기업에 대한 특징을 이해해야 질 좋은 대규모 투자유치전략을 수립하는데 도움이 될 수 있다. 최근 다국적기업의 현지국 철수는 빈번하게 발생하는 경제 현상이라고 언급되고 있지만, 여전히 존재하는 부정적 인식과 자료 부족으로 인해 이와 관련된 국내외 연구는 저조한 실정이다. 본 연구는 2010~2018년, 통계청의 기업활동조사를 토대로 국내에 진출한 해외 다국적기업의 철수요인을 프로빗 모형을 활용하여 살펴보고 있다. 분석결과, 기업의 규모는 철수 여부에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 종업원 수로 대변되는 현재의 기업 규모는 작을수록 철수 가능성이 커지며, 초기기업 규모인 투자 비용은 적은 기업일수록 철수 가능성이 크고 투자금이 높은 기업은 철수확률이 상대적으로 낮아지는 것으로 추정된다. 또한, 노동생산성이 낮은 기업은 철수할 가능성이 크며, 재무적 성과가 좋지 않은 기업 역시 철수확률이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 기업내무역을 하는 외국인투자기업은 철수의 가능성이 작으며, 모기업과의 지리적 거리가 먼 경우 철수확률이 높은 것으로 관측되었다. 국내 산업별 부가가치율 및 매출액증가율과 단독투자 여부는 부(-)의 관계를 보이나 유의성은 없는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

The exit or divestment of multinational enterprises (MNEs) is a frequent economic phenomenon. It can affect the performance of both affiliated firms and headquarters, or local labor market as well as the economies in which they are located. However, there is a lack of understating and interest or consideration in foreign divestment. This study examines why some foreign affiliates divestment. In particular, it analyses the determinants on divestment factors of multinational enterprises(MNEs) in Korea. This study used the business activity survey from the KOSIS. The Statistics Korea provide the microdata of the survey through the MDIS online system. I have obtained information from MDIS on various foreign affiliated firms for a total of 8 years from 2010 to 2018. I found that firms are likely to divest their poorly performing operations. These results are frequently found in existing research. It is also found that the size of affiliates could affect the divestment or exit. In particular, the smaller the initial investment cost, the higher the probability of divestment and the larger the number of employees, the lower the possibility of exit. And if the labor productivity of affiliates decreases, the possibility of divestment increases. With regards to type of investment, there was no statistical significance for independent investments and joint-venture. Affiliates that engage in intra-firm trade are less likely to divestment, while those that are far from their parent firm are more likely to exit. Finally, the value-added or return on sales ratio of each industry showed a negative direction, but not statistical significance was shown. This study expects the government to design a better FDI retention policies that maximize the value for firm and local economy through divestment factors.
