국문 초록

그의 책 What Are the Gospels?: A Comparison with Graeco-Roman Biography에서 리처드 버릿지는 탄탄한 장르이론과 고대문헌에 대한 꼼꼼한 분석을 통해 복음서의 장르가 그레코-로만 전기임을 설득력있게 증명했다. 또한 그레코-로만 전기의 주요한 장르적 특성 중 하나가 주인공에 대한 집중적 관심임을 구체적으로 논증했다. 하지만 연구의 범위와 한계 탓인지 이러한 장르적 특성이 복음서 독해에 어떻게 새로운 빛을 비추어줄 수 있는지 구체적인 주석작업을 실행하지 못했다. 본 논문은 이러한 공백을 메우기 위해 마가복음 1:16-20절을 중심으로 복음서 장르에 충실한 독해가 기존의 해석과 어떤 차별성을 가질 수 있는지 논증했다. 본 논문에서 구체적으로 논증하게 될 주요논점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 복음서의 장르는 그레코-로만 전기이고, 그레코-로만 전기의 주요한 장르적 특성 중 하나는 주인공에 대한 집중적 관심이다. 따라서 그레코-로만 전기의 장르적 특성에 충실한 복음서 독해란 주인공인 예수에 초점을 맞추고 그를 부각시키는 해석이어야 한다는 것이다. 둘째, 예수에게 집중하는 해석, 즉 기독론적 해석 자체는 전혀 새로운 것이 아니다. 하지만 이전의 연구들이 기독론적 해석을 주로 신학적인 입장에 근거해서 주장했다면 본 논문은 복음서의 장르 자체가 기독론적 해석을 요청하고 있다고 주장한다. 셋째, 주인공 예수에 집중하는 해석의 관점에서 보았을 때 이전 주석작업들의 한계가 포착된다. 예를 들어, 마가복음 1:16-20절의 주석작업은 주로 제자들의 즉각적이고도 급진적인 반응을 분석하는 데 대부분의 지면을 할애했다. 하지만 복음서 장르에 충실한 해석은 이같은 연구결과를 전면부정하진 않지만, 한 단계 더 나아가 제자들의 반응은 결국 예수의 권위를 부각시키는 것이라고 주장한다. 넷째, 본문에 등장하는 다른 요소들 역시 예수의 다른 모습을 조명하는 데 사용된다. 예를 들어, 17절에 나오는 예수의 초청과 약속은 그분의 권위를 더욱 부각시킨다. 또한 이러한 권위를 지녔음에도 불구하고 제자들을 직접 찾아간 것은 자신의 특권을 내려놓는 자기포기와 자기희생의 모델을 보여준다.

영문 초록

In his book entitled What Are the Gospels?: A Comparison with Graeco-Roman Biography, Richard Burridge persuasively argues that the genre of the Gospels is Greco-Roman biography. Plus, he also claims that one of the primary generic features of Greco-Roman biography is a sustained focus on the hero. However, probably due to the focus of his research, Burridge does not show how this generic feature can shed a new light on the interpretation of the Gospels. In order to fill this lacuna, this study intends to demonstrate how the interpretation attentive to this generic feature can make differences, especially focusing on Mark 1:16-20. The followings are the main arguments of this article. First, the genre of the Gospels is Greco-Roman biography and one primary generic feature is a sustained focus on the hero. Therefore, the interpretation attentive to this generic feature should focus on the hero of the Gospels, that is, Jesus Christ. Second, the interpretation focusing on Jesus is not a new enterprise at all. However, the main difference of this proposal is to claim that the Christological interpretation of the Gospels is required by the genre of the Gospels. Third, from the perspective of the interpretation attentive to the generic feature, many previous interpretations of our passage are found wanting because their primary concerns are on the responses of the disciples. However, if one takes this generic feature seriously, he or she will want to interpret disciples responses as the signs of Jesus authority. Fourth, other details of our passage also shed light on who Jesus is. For example, Jesus invitation and promise in v. 17 underscore Jesus authority. Further, despite possessing this authority, Jesus act of visiting disciples personally indicates his renunciation and sacrifice.
