국문 초록

지금의 연구대학 형태로 발전하게 된 대학이라는 사회제도는 계몽주의 이후에 전개된 근대정신의 산물로, 대학은 근대국가와 심오한 관련성을 맺고 발전해 왔다. 대학은 명백히 국가가 그 목적을 수행하는 수단이자 국가의 기능으로 인식되어 왔다. 그러나 지식은 국가의 목적에 종사하도록 요구받을 뿐 아니라, 보편성에 열려져 있어야 한다. 지식의 추구는 보편성의 토대 위에서만 성립하는 것이고 그 어떤 가치관으로부터도 자유로워질 수 있는 “해방적”기능을 갖는다. 따라서 대학은 국가에 예속되지 않는 자율적인 학문 추구와 국가 이념에의 봉사라는 두 과제를 동시에 대면할 수밖에 없다. 대학이 대학 밖의 사회 및 국가와 맺고 있는 관계는 이렇듯 단순화될 수 없는 여러 겹의 사유를 요한다. 이는 탈근대의 시대에 이르러서도 마찬가지로 요구되고 있다. 대학이 사회 속에 존립하는 환경의 변화에 따라 대학은 더욱 더 뛰어난 ‘수행성’을 발휘하도록 요구받고 있고 대학을 바라보는 일반적 시각은 다분히 기능적으로 흐르기 쉽다. 그러는 가운데 인문학의 대사회적 기능은 자칫 망각되기 쉽다. 그러나 현대사회의 중요한 문제일수록 ‘인간적 가치’의 문제와 연결되지 않은 것이 없고, 나아가서 모든 문제는 이를 역사적 고찰의 대상으로 삼는 순간 인문학의 영역으로 들어오게 된다. 그럴수록 인문학의 테두리를 미리 설정해두는 태도를 버리고 인문학과 여타의 영역을 연결시켜 가면서 적극적으로 개입할 수 있게 되는 것이 인문학이 맡아야 할 소임이다. 그 가능성은 “인간의 현실”을 다루는 한 거의 무제한이라고까지 말할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The ‘research university’ as the mode of existence of universities throughout the world is the product of modernity, and as such, has evolved in profound relationship with the modern nation-state. University has been recognized as one of the essential means for the modern state to function and to meet its ends. But knowledge produced by the university is constituted on the basis of ‘universality’ and, therefore, by definition transcends the boundaries of the nation, while at the same time it is asked to serve the purposes of the nation-state. Universities are not free from these seemingly contradictory tasks of the autonomous pursuit of truth and service to the purposes of the nation. This becomes more acute in the way universities exist in the ‘postmodern’ world. With the changes of the environment in which universities exist in society, universities are more likely to be looked upon in terms of “performativity”, just as ‘productive’ aspect of knowledge is emphasized before it is looked upon as ‘autonomous’ or ‘liberating’. Humanistic disciplines may tend to lose much of its appeals. But all urgent issues of the modern society that appear remote from the concerns of ‘the humanities’ not only have ethical and philosophical dimensions but are deeply related to the question of values. And, besides, they become the objects of the humanities or ‘human sciences’ as soon as their meanings are thought about historically. Therefore the ‘boundaries’ of the humanities we have habitually or unreflectively posed to ourselves have to be discarded. The task of the humanities is to be able to intervene in all serious issues of contemporary society, and there is virtually no limit to its possibilities insofar as we deal with human realities.
