복합어 분석을 통한 불교의 문법학 수용 양상 검토(I)

국문 초록

바수반두(Vasubandhu, 世親)의 『아비달마구사론』(Abhidharmakośabhāṣya)을 주석한 야쇼미트라(Yaśomitra, 稱友)의 『아미달마구사론명료의석(칭우소)』(Sphuṭārthā Abhidharmakośavyākhyā)은 근대적 의미의 ‘구사론 연구’를 가능하게 해준 의미있는 자료라고 평가된다. 그는 바수반두가 전달하고자 했던 단어·문장의 의미를 명확히 하려는 목적에서 이 주석서를 저술하면서 빈번하게 산스크리트 문법학을 구사하였다. 이러한 사실은 『칭우소』 곳곳에서 발견되는 빠니니(Pāṇini)나 빠딴잘리(Patañjali) 등이 규정한 문법규칙에 대한 인용이 입중해주고 있다. 이러한 까닭에 야쇼미트라가 선택 또는 구사하는 문법규칙의 역할 등은 연구자들의 규명 대상이 되어 왔다. 본고는 『구사론』에서 문법학적으로 가장 활발하게 논의된 용어의 하나인 ‘아비달마(abhidharma)’라는 복합어 분석에 대해 기존 연구자들과 다른 시각에서 접근한다. 지금까지 복합어 분석을 통한 어원해석과 이를 바탕으로 한 정의에 방점을 둔 많은 연구가 동북아시아, 특히 일본을 중심으로 진행되어왔다. 하지만 이들 연구의 대부분은 불교 경전들의 산스크리트화 과정에서 시도된 고전 문법학 수용 양상을 밝힌다는 목적보다는 순수한 ‘정의(定義)’에 치중하고 있다. 『구사론』과 『칭우소』를 기반으로 한 일부 연구가 ‘어휘 등의 용례와 산스크리트 문법 규칙과의 불일치 등’에 대해 경전 및 주석서 저자들이 어떻게 대처하였는지를 살펴보고 있어 시사하는 바가 크지만, 충분한 검토가 이루어졌다고 보기는 힘들다. 본고는 바수반두와 야쇼미트라의 문법 수용의 양상을 조명하기 위해 수행되는 두 단계에 걸친 연구의 첫 번째에 해당한다. 여기에서는 그간 간과되어왔던 새로운 문법학 규정을 고찰하여 기존 연구의 논의를 재검토하기 위한 기초로 삼는다. 이를 위해 ‘아비달마’에 대한 인식을 재검토하고 나아가 그러한 인식이 문법학적으로 어떠한 논쟁을 불러 일으키는지를 살펴본다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 한 후속 연구를 통해 야쇼미트라가 자의적으로 정통 문법학을 원용하고 있다는 종래의 견해를 반박하고 적극적으로 그의 입장을 대변한다.

영문 초록

Yaśomitra’s Sphuṭārthā Abhidharmakośavyākhyā is a Commentary to Vasubandhu’s Abhidharmakośabhāṣya. This Commentary is considered to be a meaningful data that enabled the modern ‘Kośabhāṣya study’. He wrote this annotation through Sanskrit grammar skill with the aim of clarifying the meaning of the words and sentences that Vasubandhu wanted to convey. This fact is disproved by citations of grammatical rules prescribed by Pāṇini or Patañjali, which are found throughout Sphuṭārthā. For this reason, the role of grammar rules that Yashomitra chooses or uses has been the subject of researchers’ investigation. This paper raises questions about the researchers’ view on the analysis of compound (samāsa) ‘abhidharma,’ one of the most discussed terms in grammar in the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya. Until now, many studies have focused on etymological analysis through compound analysis and definition based on it, in Northeast Asia, especially in Japan. However, most of these studies focus on ‘definition’ of abhidharma rather than the purpose of revealing the acceptance of classical grammar attempted in the process of Sanskritization of Buddhist scriptures. Although some studies based on the theory of Abhidharmakośabhāṣya and Sphuṭārthā have examined how the authors of scriptures and annotations dealt with the usage of vocabulary and the inconsistency with the rules of Sanskrit grammar, it is hard to say that sufficient review has been made. This paper is the first stage of two researches to cast light upon the aspects of acceptance of grammar by Vasubandhu and Yaśomitra. This is a basic study to review existing studies through additional Sanskrit grammar that has been overlooked. For this, I review the perception of ‘Abhidarma’ and examine what kind of controversy such perception causes grammatically. And through the following research based on this, I will actively represent his position against the conventional view that ‘Yaśomitra arbitrarily uses orthodox grammar.’
