성찰적 관점에서 본 저널리즘과 사회과학

국문 초록

이 논문은 피에르 부르디외의 장이론을 통해 사회학을 중심으로 사회과학과 언론이 맺어야할 올바른 관계는 무엇이며, 이에 비추어 한국의 경험적 상황은 어떠한지를 실증적으로 검토하였다. 오늘날 모든 학문은 그 학문이 발전시켜온 전문성을 토대로 과학적 성과를 거두고 이를 대중과 소통 함으로써 정체성을 형성해 나간다. 부르디외는 사회학이 과학으로서 전문성을 확보해야 할 뿐 아니라 학문적 자율성 위에서 언론과의 관계를 통해 그것이 생산한 지식을 대중에게 전달해야 한다고 주장한다. 즉, 사회학의 존재가 학문 그 자체로서의 자율성과 대중과의 소통 사이의 변증법적 관계에 있으며, 이 때 언론과의 관계설정이 사회학이 대중과 어떤 관계를 맺을지를 결정하는 핵심적인 요소라는 것이다. 특히, 전문성에 기반하지 않은 사회학 지식의 보급은 부르디외에게 사회학-언론 모두에게 악영향을 미치는 것으로 여겨진다. 오늘날 한국의 사회학-언론 관계를 성찰적 관점에서 검토하기 위해 연구자들은 두 가지 경험조사를 실시하였다. 첫 번째 조사는 2005년에서 2009년까지 <한겨레>와 <조선일보>에서 나타난 사회학자 코멘트 인용패턴에 대한 분석이다. 여기서 두 언론에서 나타나는 사회학은 주로 사회공간에서 각 언론의 위치와 그 위치에 따른 이해관계에 의해 일방적으로 주조되고 있음이 드러났다. 사회학자의 인용은 두 언론사 모두에서 각 언론사에 입장에 친화적인 소수 학자 풀(pool)에 편중되어 있었으며, 이는 사회학 장에서의 전문적 연구에 의해 생산된 객관적 지식에 기반한다고 보기 어렵고, 사회학 지식이 대중에게 올바르게 전달되지 못하고 있음을 보여준다. 둘째는 사회학 전공 학부생들의 전공관련 학술정보취득 경로에 대한 설문조사 분석이다. 여기에서는 학술정보에 관심이 높은 전공생들일수록 미디어, 그중에서도 신문 등 인쇄매체를 통해 많은 정보를 취득하는 경향이 나타났다. 결국 각 언론에 친화적인 소수학자들에 의해 양산되는 비전문적 코멘트는 신문을 통해 학술정보를 취득하려는 전공생들에게 사회학에 관한 전공관련 정보를 객관적으로 제공하기 어려으며, 장 내에서 학문적 인정의 정당한 위계구조를 교란시킬 수 있다는 결론이 가능하다.

영문 초록

This article examined what the proper relationship is between social science and mass media, and what the empirical Korean situation is through the field theory of Pierre Bourdieu. Today s all academic disciplines make its own identity through acquiring scientific achivement by its speciality which is such discipline has been developed, and communicating it. Bourdieu asserts that sociology, as a science, not only have to hold scientific speciality, but also to disseminate produced knowledge to public audience through proper relationship with journalism. Existence of sociology has dialectic relationship between autonomy as discipline itself and communication with public, and that the way of make relation with journalism is central element that defines how relationship with public is. Especially, for Bourdieu, dissemination of knowledge which isn t based on autonomy of sociological field is regarded harmful both to sociology and to journalism. In this regard, this study had two empirical research based on Bourdian perspective to examine Korean sociology-journalism relationship. First is research about sociologist s comment citation pattern on news articles of The Hankyorae and The Chosun. In this place, research revealed that sociology which is represented on two newspapers has been unilaterally molded by each media’s position and their interests in the social space. In both newspapers, sociologist s comment citation was concentrated on several particular sociologists, and this could hardly be seen as being based on objective knowledge produced by professional research in the sociological field. Second is a survey analysis which is questioned to undergraduate students who major in sociology to find out the route for acquiring academic information. In here, research revealed the fact that students who are more interested in academic information than others inclined to acquire large amount of information through media, especially printed media. Consequently, it could be concluded that unprofessional comments which is monopolized and mass-produced by a handful of sociologists hardly provide objective knowledge about sociological field to students, and also that this phenomena could harass the legitimate hierarchical structure of academic recognition in the field.
