조상제사에 관한 개혁주의 선교신학적 접근

국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 오늘날 선교현장에서 성행하는 조상제사의 문제를 개혁주의 선교신학적 관점에서 제시하기 위함이다. 복음과 문화의 관계는 타문화권에서 선교할 때 매우 중요한 주제가 된다. 타문화에 관한 이해가 전혀 없이 복음을 전파하면, 현지인들에게 외국종교로 인식되어 선교의 어려움을 겪게 된다. 반면 복음이 문화에 흡수되어 지엽적이고 문화적 복음이 되면 혼합주의를 피할 수 없게 된다. 이런 점에서, 조상제사는 문화인류학적 접근과 종교현상학적인 연구를 양자적으로 해야 한다. 특히 역사적으로 한국에서 조상제사는 천주교와 개신교의 접근방식이 서로 달랐다. 따라서 본고는 조상제사가 지닌 사회적 기능을 살핌으로써 현재까지도 조상숭배가 그치지 않는 이유를 답변한다. 그리고 한국의 조상숭배는 우리 민족 고유의 문화유산이 아니라 중국으로부터 전래 된 유교적 산물임을 밝힌다. 또한 개신교회는 어떤 이유로 조상제사를 우상숭배로 간주하고 거부했는가를 역사적 과정과 성경신학적 관점에서 연구한다. 그렇게 함으로써, 저자는 조상제사에 대한 개혁주의 선교신학적 접근을 제시한다. 이것은 문화우위적 선교방법론을 통한 ‘상황화 신학’을 피하고, 문화이해를 전제한 복음전파를 통해 죄로 오염된 문화를 변화시키는 변혁적 선교(Transforming Mission)를 실천해야 한다는 주장이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this article is to address the problem with the culture of ancestral rites in Korea, which flourishes in the current missionary scene, from the reformed mission theological perspective. The relationship between the Gospel and traditional culture becomes a critical subject when doing missionary work in a foreign culture. Preaching the Gospel without any understanding of cultural background causes difficulties in the missionary work as the religion may be perceived as an exotic religion by the local people. On the other hand, if the Gospel is blended into the culture to become peripheral and cultural, the syncretism of religion becomes inevitable. In this regard, studies on the ancestral rites ought be done by quantum steps with both cultural anthropological and religious phenomenological approaches. Particularly in the history of Korea, the ancestral rites has been treated differently by the Catholic and Protestant churches. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the reason why the culture of ancestral rites is still continued in Korea by examining the social functions of the ancestral rites. Moreover, the study reveals that the culture of ancestral rites is not a unique cultural heritage of Korea, but is a vestige of Confucianism from China. Lastly, the study investigates the reason why the Protestant Church has been regarding the culture of ancestral rites as an idolatry and, thus, denied it, from both historical and biblical theological perspectives. Ultimately, the paper addresses the reformed mission theological approaches to discuss the culture of ancestral rites. Accordingly, the study calls for the need of the ‘Transforming Mission’, which involves spreading of the Gospel with understanding of the cultural background for transformation of the culture that is corrupted with sin of people, while avoiding spreading of the ‘Contextualized Theology’ through the theory of culture-dominated missionary work.
