부모ㆍ친척의 사회자본이 교육성취에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 부모ㆍ친척의 사회경제적 배경과 부모ㆍ자녀, 친척ㆍ학생간의 사회자본이 학업성취에 미치는 영향은 물론 부모ㆍ자녀, 친척ㆍ학생간의 사회자본이 부모ㆍ친척의 사회경제적 배경과 학업성취 사이의 관계를 매개하는지에 대하여 알아보는 것이었다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과같다. 첫째, 본 연구에서 부모ㆍ자녀간 사회자본인 신뢰와 부모의 사회경제적 배경(아버지 학력)은 자녀의학업성취에 직접효과가 있었다. 또한 부모의 사회경제적 배경(가족의 생활수준)은 부모ㆍ자녀간의 사회자본인 신뢰를 매개로 하여 학업성취에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 간접효과를 나타냈다. 이는 아버지의 높은 학력이 자녀의 학업성취를 높이는데 중요한 의미를 지니고 있음을 시사해 주는 결과로 해석할 수 있다. 다시 말해 부모ㆍ자녀 사이의 애정을 바탕으로 한 자녀에 대한 신뢰는 자녀의 학업성취를 높이는데 직접적으로 긍정적인 영향을 미치며, 또한 부모의 사회경제적 배경(가족의 생활수준)이 자녀의 학업성취에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 과정을 매개하는 역할을 한다는 점에서 부모ㆍ자녀 간의 신뢰는 자녀의 학업성취를 높이는데 직ㆍ간접적으로 상당 부분 기여하고 있음을 알 수 있다.둘째, 친척의 사회경제적 배경(친척의 집 소유여부, 친척 직업인 판매직ㆍ서비스직)이 학업성취에 직접효과가 있음이 검증되었고, 동시에 친척의 사회경제적 배경(친척의 집 소유여부, 친척 직업인 전문직ㆍ자유직)이 친척ㆍ학생간의 사회자본인 신뢰를 매개로 학업성취에 긍정적 영향을 미치는 간접효과가있다는 것을 확인하였다. 보다 구체적으로는 친척이 집을 자가로 소유할 만큼 경제적으로 안정되었을 때학생의 학업성취가 높고, 친척이 판매직ㆍ서비스직과 같은 직업을 가지고 있을 때에는 학생의 학업성취가 높지 않다. 나아가서 친척의 사회경제적 배경(친척의 집 소유여부, 친척 직업인 전문직ㆍ자유직)은 친척ㆍ학생과의 신뢰를 통하여 학생의 학업성취에 긍정적 영향을 미치고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 물론 친척ㆍ학생간 사회자본은 학생의 학업성취에 직접적으로 유의미한 긍정적 영향을 미치고 있다.이는 친척이 학생에게 충분한 가족애를 가지고 신뢰를 형성하고 있는 것이 학생의 높은 학업성취를 돕는 직ㆍ간접적인 방법이 될 수 있음을 보여 준다. 또한 부모ㆍ자녀의 관계, 그리고 친척ㆍ학생간의 관계에서 사회자본의 구성 요소로 설정한 신뢰, 연결망, 호혜성 가운데 신뢰가 중추적인 역할을 한다는 사실은, 결국 학생의 학업성취를 북돋우는데 가장 중요한 역할을 하는 사회자본 변수는 학생을 정서적으로지지해주며 믿어주는 “신뢰”라고 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to examine how parents and relatives’ socioeconomic backgrounds and social capital influence the academic achievements, and whether parents and relatives’ social capital mediate the relation between parents and relatives’ socioeconomic backgrounds and the academic achievements. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, parents’ socioeconomic backgrounds (fathers’ education) can have the important meaning in enhancing children’s academic achievements. This concluded that the trust in students based on the affection between parents and children had the direct and positive effect on enhancing children’s academic achievements, and also played the mediating role in making parents’ socioeconomic backgrounds (the living standard within families) had the positive effect on children’s academic achievements, so that the trust between parents and children considerably contributed directly and indirectly to enhancing children’s academic achievements. Second, if relatives were rich economically because of house possession, students’ academic achievements were high, whereas if relatives’ occupations were sales occupation / service occupation, students’ academic achievements were not high. And, relatives’ socioeconomic backgrounds (relatives’ house possession, and expert occupation / free occupation) had the positive effect on students’ academic achievements through the mediation of the trust between relatives and students. Of course, here, the social capital between relatives and students had the significant, direct, and positive effect on students’ academic achievements. This study can be meaningful in that this study proved that relatives could contribute to students’ high academic achievements by trusting in students with sufficient family affection. And, in the relation between parents and children and the relation between relatives and students, among trust, network, and reciprocity which were set up as the components of social capital, the trust played the pivotal role for both parents and relatives, and so this study concluded that the variable of social capital, which was very important for realizing students’ high academic achievements, was families’ trust which supported and believed their students emotionally.
