On the Impact of IT Revolution on Industrial Competitive Landscape

국문 초록

전통적인 연구에서의 기술혁신은 기업이나 산업에 불연속적으로 영향을 미친다는 특징이 있다. 즉 기술 혁신의 파급효과가 시기별로 단절적, 일회적, 개별적인 성격으로 진행된다는 것이다. 그러나 현재의IT기술 발전의 파급효과는 동시다발적, 연속적, 융복합화 성격을 나타낸다는 점에서 과거와 다른 성격을가진다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 IT기술의 발전으로 인한 변화 속에서 발생하는 산업 내 또는 산업 간 경쟁 양상을 살펴보기 위해 이를 4가지로 유형화 해 보았다. 첫째, IT기술 발전의 파급효과로 인한 고객 접점의 권력이동(power shift) 현상은 가치사슬 상 고객접점 부문에서의 기업 간 연합을 촉진시키는 경향이 있다. 이로 인해 기업 간 M&A가 증가하고, 항공사간글로벌 제휴와 같은 다자간 네트워크 형성이 이루어지고 있다. 둘째, IT기술 발전은 타 산업과의 연계를 촉진시키는 경향이 있다. 이로 인해 산업간 연계가 증가하게되는데, 이러한 예로는 항공 마일리지, OK cash back 등을 들 수 있다. 셋째, IT기술 발전은 가치사슬 상에서의 단순한 거래(transaction) 활동을 내부 네트워크를 통한 조정활동으로 전환(from transaction to inter-network coordination)시켜 가치사슬의 거리를 좁게 하는 경향이 있다. 이는 e-Marketplace의 형성에서 쉽게 발견할 수 있다. 마지막으로 IT기술 발전은 최종소비자와 거리가 멀리 떨어져 있는 기술 기반의 산업(technology-based industry)에서 디지털기술의 융복합화 등 새로운 개념을 발생시켜 이들 기업의 분화와 세계화를촉진시킨다. IBM 중심의 컴퓨터 산업이 인텔, 산성전자, MS등으로 분화된 것이 예라 할 수 있다. 이와 같이 IT기술 혁신을 원동력으로 기존의 산업 질서가 재편되고 있는 만큼 네트워크의 경제성, 경쟁사가 모방하거나 따라 잡기 어려운 새로운 비즈니스 시스템 등 새로운 환경에서 경쟁우위를 추구하기 위한 전략혁신이 절실히 요구된다.

영문 초록

According to existing studies on technological renovation, the impact of information technology (IT) is periodical, temporary, and individual. However, the impact of IT competency development is rather simultaneous, continuous and ubiquitous. This study will discuss four patterns of changes in the competitive landscape based on the development of IT. First, it creates the phenomenon of ‘power shift’ at a customer interface and also promotes the cooperation among homogeneous industries from the viewpoint of value-chain. Second, it promotes the cooperation with different industries and increases the cooperation among heterogeneous industries. Third, it converts value-chain from transaction to inter-network coordination and reduces value-chain distance. And the last, it influences technology-based industry, which is distant from the ultimate consumer, by bringing new perceptions. Therefore, IT competency promotes the unbundling process and globalization of these technology-based industries.
