기업 윤리경영이 기업의 현금 보유에 미치는 영향에 대한 국제연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 국가별 기업 윤리경영 수준이 기업의 현금 보유량에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 보다 구체적으로 본 연구에서는 스위스의 국제경영개발원(International Institute for Management Development)이 매년 발표하는 국가별 윤리경영 지수를 사용하여 국가별 기업윤리 수준을 측정하고, 해당 지수와 개별 기업의 현금보유 수준 간 상관관계를 2002년부터 2015년까지 13개 국가에 속한 총 4,872개의 기업/연도 관측치를 활용하여 실증적으로 분석하였다. 실증분석 결과 기업 윤리경영 수준이 높은 국가에 속한 기업일수록 현금 보유량이 유의하게 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 나아가 기업 윤리경영 수준과 현금 보유량 간 음(-)의 상관관계는 기업지배구조가 취약한 기업들에 대해 보다 강하게 나타나는 것으로 관찰되었다. 이러한 실증결과는 주주의 이익을 보호하고자 하는 기존의 기업지배구조 수단을 대체하여 기업 윤리경영이 대리인 문제를 완화시킴으로써 기업의 과잉현금 보유를 억제할 수 있는 추가적인 기제로 역할 할 수 있음을 의미한다. 본 연구는 기업의 현금보유 수준에 영향을 미치는 요소로서 기업의 윤리경영을 제시했다는데 주된 공헌점을 가진다. 특히 경영자가 사적 이익을 위해 과도하게 현금을 보유하고자 하는 대리인 문제를 기업 윤리경영이 기존의 기업지배구조 수단을 대체하여 추가적으로 해소할 수 있다는 점을 지적했다는 점에서 중요한 정책적 시사점을 가질 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

This study investigates the association between the extent of firms’ ethical management and cash holdings around the world. By using an international sample of 4,872 firm-year observations from 13 countries for the period of 2002-2015, we conduct multiple regression analyses of the level of cash holdings on the extent of firms’ethical management. More specifically, we use the ethical practices score, one of the national competitiveness indexes developed by International Institute for Management Development, as the proxy for the extent of firms’ ethical management. We observe a negative association between corporate cash holdings and the extent of firms’ethical management. Furthermore, such a negative association is greater when the corporate governance is weaker. Our results are consistent with that firms’ethical management, as additional corporate governance mechanism, helps to limit opportunistic behavior from managers when determining the firms’levels of cash holdings. This study contributes to the literature by suggesting the firms’ ethical management as the determinants of corporate cash holdings around the world. This study also provides an important policy implication that firms’ethical management can substitute the role of corporate governance to address the agency problem within firms’decisions of cash holdings.
