국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 식민지 조선에 전래된 서양의 악기가 어떠한 과정을 거쳐 문화적 의미를 획득해갔는지 보여주는 것이다. 특히 악기를 미디어라는 관점에서 바라보면서 악기의 ‘미디어 사회문화사’를 제안했다. 그 이유는 음악에 얽힌 다양한 주체와 담론의 흐름들을 조금 더 효과적으로 구성해보고 싶었기 때문이다. 악기는 음악적 사고와 느낌을 표현하기 위한 ‘물적 매개물’이기도 하지만 19세기 유럽의 제국주의가 아시아 국가들에 끼친 영향을 극명하게 드러내주는 문화상품이기도 하다. 즉, 일제 강점기하 조선의 근대화와 이중음악성(bi-musicality)을 동시에 설명해줄 수 있는 미디어가 곧 서양악기라는 뜻이다. 근대화 이전까지만 해도 전통악기는 주로 특수한 계층이나 집단에 의해서 연주되거나 소유할 수 있었다. 하지만 20세기에 들어서면서 양악 음악회의 성행, 근대적 음악교육의 확산으로 악기는 문화적이고 교육적인 것으로 받아들여졌고 상징적 의미를 획득하기 시작했다. 즉, 전통적인 음악문화 위에 양악이 유입되면서 조선에는 두 가지 음악문화가 공존하게 되었고 담론적 경합이 불가피했다. 이 논문은 그와 같은 담론들을 통해 서양악기가 어떻게 전유되었으며 어떠한 과정을 통해 문화적 의미를 획득할 수 있었는지를 살펴보기 위해 1920~1930년대의 잡지와 신문의 기사들을 분석했다. 더불어 악기에 대한 선행연구들을 검토함으로써 지금까지는 잘 논의되지 않았던 악기의 사회적·문화적 의미를 재조명했다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper show how musical instruments acquire cultural meaning in Korean society under Japanese colonial rule. For analyzing the musical instruments, I propose a theoretical framework, ‘sociocultural history of media.’ The reason is that the music intertwined with various subjects so the flow of discourse organized effectively. Musical instruments can express thoughts and feelings as ‘physical medium’ of music and also they are cultural products which reveal the influence of 19th century European imperialism on Asian countries. In other words, musical instruments can explain Korea’s modernization and the bi-musicality under the Japanese occupation at one time. Until the modernization, only special groups or classes could play traditional instruments but the turn of the 20th century, the prevalence of western music concerts, spread of modern education, music instruments obtain cultural and educational significance and began to acquire symbolic meaning. That is influx of western music into the traditional Korean musical culture raise competition between two cultures was inevitable. This paper, through the competition of discourses, tries to reconstitute a historical trajectory of social usage of musical instruments therefore 1920s~1930s’ magazine and newspaper articles were analyzed. In addition, I examined prior studies of musical instruments and shed new light on sociocultural implications of musical instruments so far had rarely discussed in Korea.
