힙합과 아시안 아메리칸의 정체성 형성에 관한 소고

국문 초록

미국에서 음악 혹은 문화로서 힙합의 생산과 소비는 더 이상 아프리칸 아메리칸 흑인들의 전유물이 아니다. 하지만 다양한 인종과 민족의 청년집단들이 힙합 문화의 주체로 활약하고 있음에도 아시안 아메리칸(아시아계 미국인)들은 여전히 힙합의 주변인으로 간주되는 게 현실이다. 이는 주류 언론과 미디어를 중심으로 한 아시안 아메리칸에 대한 편견의 탓이 크다. 가령, ‘흑인도 백인도 아닌’ 애매한 인종적 특성과 주류사회에서 구축된 ‘모델 마이너리티(model minority)’ 이미지 등을 이유로, 아시안 아메리칸은 기존 힙합 문화의 ‘마치스모(machismo)’적인 태도에 맞지 않는 인종 혹은 종족(ethnic) 집단으로 단정되기도 한다. 하지만 그러한 편견과 부정에도 힙합 음악과 그 문화적 표현물들은 미국 내 대도시를 중심으로 아시안 아메리칸 청년집단의 새로운 문화적 실천 코드로 자리 잡고 있다. 이 글은 이들 새로운 세대 아시안 아메리칸들이, 특히 주류 음악산업 바깥에서 힙합 문화와 음악의 실천에 개입하는 과정과 방식을 살피고자 한다. 샌프란시스코 베이에리어를 중심으로 진행된 필드워크와 리서치를 바탕으로, 아시안 아메리칸 청년집단이 하나의 지역 하위문화로서 힙합의 수용과 생산에 관여하는 과정과 그 실천의 가능성을 살펴볼 것이다. 아울러 힙합의 다양한 문화적 표현물과 이벤트를 자신들만의 방식으로 ‘재전유’함으로써 이들이 자신의 복잡한 정체성을 표현하거나 재고하는 과정과 방식도 다루고자 한다. 힙합 문화와 그 공동체가 일반적으로 아시안 아메리칸 청년집단을 배제해왔음을 고려할 때, 힙합의 소비 혹은 생산에 개입하는 과정이 아시안 아메리칸 청년들의 인종, 혹은 종족 정체성 형성과 어떤 연관을 맺는지를 살펴보는 것은 흥미로운 인류학적 주제가 될 것이다.

영문 초록

It is not surprising that both production and consumption of hip-hop music and culture are no longer confined to African American youth in the United States. However, among those non-African Americans, it seems still uncomfortable to relate Asian Americans to hip-hop. Mainstream journalism explains that such an oddity is mainly due to their race and ethnic identity of “neither White nor Black,” while their ‘model minority’ image does not fit well with the typical ‘machismo’ attitude of hip-hop culture. Regardless of such a preconception, hip-hop music and its related cultural expressive forms have developed to become a new way of cultural practice for Asian American youth, particularly in metropolitan areas where Asian American populations are heavily concentrated. I examine how Asian Americans have been engaged and involved in the cultural practice of hip-hop. Based on my fieldwork research in the San Francisco Bay Area, it is focused on what are the meaning and the potential of popular music reception and production of this youth group as a subculture. I will also explore how, by reappropriating various cultural expressive forms and events in hip-hop, the younger generation Asian Americans in the local can express and negotiate their complex identity. Considering the fact that ‘hip-hop culture’ and its community have been dominated by non-Asian American youth, it would be interesting to observe the complicated identity formations of Asian Americans in terms of race and ethnicity through both production and consumption of hip-hop.
