국문 초록

이 글은 음악인류학적인 측면에서 미디어 테크놀로지의 변화가 한국 대중 음악의 상상력을 어떻게 재구성했는지 살펴본다. 현대 대중음악은 악보가 아닌 녹음을 매개로 유통된다. 따라서 대중음악에 대한 연구는 기보의 형태로 환원될 수 없는 소리의 경험에 대한 문화상대주의적 시선을 지닌 분석이 되어야 한다. 문화적 실천으로 음악을 바라본다는 것은 개별 문화마다 가진 특정 음계나 악기에 대한 연주 관습이나 감정, 태도만을 의미하지 않는다. 세계 어느 곳에 서나 같은 소리를 재현해주는 리듬 머신(rhythm machine) 같은 기계장치의 도입과 운용에서도 개별 문화에서 차지하는 역할과 위치가 달라진다. 아프리 카계 미국 음악에서 리듬은 음악의 한 요소라기보다 폴리리듬(polyrhythm)의 전통에서 시작된 음악 그 자체에 가깝다. 한국 대중음악에서 리듬 머신 사용을 통한 음악 작업은 미국에서의 사용과 다른 의미로 다가온다. 리듬 머신과 샘플러가 만들어낸 매우 미국적인 싱커페이션은 이를 연주하는 음악가의 문화적 감각과 태도로 인해 비슷하면서도 전혀 다른 음악을 만들어냈다. 한국의 연주자에게 낯설었던 리듬과 음악의 체계가 단순한 기계적인 장치의 유입에 따라 극적으로 한국 대중음악의 일부가 되었다. 리듬 머신의 도입과 일반화는 같은 장비를 이용한 미국 힙합과 일렉트로닉 음악과 같은 소리를 만들어내지 않았다. 같은 리듬을 만드는 전기장치를 두고도 각기 다른 음악에 대한 역사적·문화적 맥락에 의해 다른 소리로 경험된 것이다. 바로 이것이 전자악기가 보편화된 지금, 좀 더 많은 문화상대주의적 음악 연구가 필요한 이유다.

영문 초록

This paper examines how the changes in media technology and the distribution of global popular music have reconstructed the imagination of Korean popular music in the ethnomusicological aspect. Modern pop music is experienced through recording rather than by music score or performing music. Therefore, studies on popular music should be analyzed with cultural relativistic viewpoints on the experience of recorded sound that can not be reduced to the form of musical notation. Cultural practices of music do not mean only the customs, feelings, and attitudes about specific musical scales or musical instruments of individual cultures. Even the roles and positions of rhythm machines, which reproduce the same beats, timbres and sound everywhere in the world, also differ in different cultures. are also different. In the culture of African American music, rhythm is closer to the music itself, which began with the tradition of poly rhythm rather than as a component of music. But Music work through the use of rhythm machines in Korean pop music has a different meaning and ways than the use in the United States. A very African American syncopation of rhythm, created by rhythm machines and samplers, produced similar but com-pletely different music due to the cultural sense and attitude of the Korean musicians playing it. The different system of rhythm in music of African American, which was unfamiliar to Korean musicians, became a part of Korean popular music dramatically through mechanical devices. The using of the same equipment－rhythm machine did not produce same sounds such as American hip-hop and electronic music. Even with the electric device that create the same rhythm, it has been experienced in different sounds by the historical and cultural context of different music. Now that electronic instruments have become common in worldwide, more cultural relativistic music research is needed.
