국문 초록

기술기반 벤처기업들이 설립 초기에 나타나는 신생조직의 불리함을 극복해야 하지만, 성장하 면서 경험하게 되는 다양한 어려움을 잘 극복해야 지속적인 생존과 성장이 가능하다는 것은 잘 알려져 있다. 비록 이러한 성장통 관리의 중요성은 많이 강조되고 있지만, 조직성장단계의 성장기에서 기업경영의 어려움을 잘 극복하지 못하는 경우에 어떤 대안을 선택하는 것이 합리적인지에 대한 논의는 많지 않다. 성장기 벤처기업들이 특히 고려해야 하는 중요한 의사결정 중의 하나는 사업을 지속해야 할지, 아니면 기업의 지분을 외부에 매각하고 투자할 금액을 회수해야 할지와 관련된다. 이러한 출구 전략은 성장기 벤처기업이 고려해야 할 중요한 선택 사항임에도 불구하고 대다수의 기업들이 최초공모를 가장 대표적인 출구 전략으로 고려하고 있기 때문에 성장기 벤처기업들이 선택할 수 있는 다른 중요한 출구 전략 유형인 인수합병과 기업매각에 대한 논의는 제한된다. 이에 본 연구는 성장기 벤처기업이 직면하는 기업경영의 어려움과 성장기 벤처기업이 형성하게 되는 기업가적 지향성이 인수합병과 기업매각이라는 출구 전략과 어떠한 관련성이 있는지를 파악하였다. 이를 위해 한국의 벤처기업을 대상으로 조사한 1,689개 설문 자료를 이용하여 다음과 같은 분석결과를 도출하였다. 첫째, 성장기 벤처기업이 직면한 기술개발과 판로개척의 어려움뿐만 아니라 자금운영의 어려움이 성장기 벤처기업들로 하여금 인수합병과 기업매각이라는 출구 전략을 고려하게 하는 중요한 요인임을 확인했다. 둘째, 벤처기업의 기업가적 지향성은 성장기 벤처기업들이 출구 전략을 고려하는데 유의미한 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것을 확인했다. 이러한 분석결과에 기초하여 본 연구의 이론적, 실무적 시사점 및 연구의 한계와 이를 극복할 수 있는 미래의 연구 방향에 대해 기술하였다.

영문 초록

It is well known that continuous survival and growth can be possible only when technology-based venture firms overcome not only the disadvantages of start-up organizations but the various difficulties they experience as they grow up. Although the importance of managing these growth channels is already well known, there is not much discussion about which alternative is reasonable to choose if the difficulties of corporate management are not well overcome in the growth phase. In particular, one of the important decisions that growth-level entities should consider is whether to continue their business or to recover the amount to sell and invest in the entity. This exit strategy is an important option for growth-stage venture firms to consider, but discussions on other important types of exit strategies, mergers and acquisitions and sales, are limited because the majority of companies consider IPOs as the most representative exit strategy. This study identified how the difficulties of enterprise management faced by growth-level venture businesses and the entrepreneurial orientation that growth-level venture firms are related to their exit strategies of mergers and acquisitions and corporate sales. To this end, this study analyzed the survey responses of 1,689 growth-level venture companies on mergers and acquisitions and sales, confirming that difficulties in funding as well as the difficulties in technology development and market opening faced by growth-level venture companies, and entrepreneurial orientation have significant impacts on the consideration of exit strategies of growth-level venture companies. Based on these findings, the theoretical and practical implications of this study were discussed and the limitations of the study and the subsequent research directions to overcome them were described.
