국문 초록

본 연구는 베트남 결혼이주여성의 사회적 네트워크를 가족자원, 에스닉 네트워크, 연계적 사회자본을 중심으로 분석하고, 그 결과를 바탕으로 이들의 사회적 네트워크의 성격과 의미를 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 5명의 이주여성을 심층 면접하였다. 이제까지 사회적 네트워크 연구들은 네트워크의 형태와 구조, 속성 등에 주목하여 이주자들이 맺는 관계유형의 차이를 설명하고, 강한 유대와 약한 유대, 결속적 유대와 교량적 유대 등 다양한 개념화를 발전시켜 왔으나 네트워크를 이분법적이고 정적인 것으로 간주하여 네트워크의 다차원적이며 중첩적인 속성을 충분히 고찰하지 못하였다. 결혼이주여성이 가족경계를 넘어 사회관계를 형성하는데 한국어 능력은 중요한 자원이 된다. 시간이 지나면서 점차 이웃이나 에스닉 공동체, 민간이나 공적 서비스기관 등과 다양한 사회적 네트워크를 형성하고 확장한다. 본 연구에서 결혼이주여성은 자영업을 도모하기 위한 가족전략으로 에스닉 네트워크를 활용하거나 한국사회의 배타적인 기회구조와 차별에 대한 대응으로 에스닉 네트워크를 선택하였다. 한편 결혼이주여성은 상대적으로 빈약한 가족자원을 극복하며 삶을 살아가는 방편으로 민간이나 공공기관에 접촉하여 공적 서비스를 활용한다. 결혼이주여성을 한국사회의 일원으로 적극적으로 통합시키려는 다문화 사회정책은 이주여성이 손쉽게 공적 서비스를 활용할 수 있도록 기회를 제공한다. 하지만 이러한 과정에서 의도하지 않게 형성되는 연계적 사회자본은 이주여성이 가정폭력이나 가난과 같은 삶의 취약성에 노출되기 쉽다는 현실을 반영한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 연계적 사회자본은 결혼이주여성의 취약성을 극복하는 데 도움을 주는 정서적, 사회적 지지망이자 에스닉 네트워크 형성을 가능하게 하는 계기가 되고 있다. 이러한 사실은 앞으로 네트워크 연구가 네트워크의 다차원적이고 중층적인 측면을 고려할 필요가 있다는 점을 시사해 준다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the formation and configuration of multidimensional social networks that Vietnamese marriage migrant women have- focusing on family resources, ethnic networks and specifically linking social capital- and explore how they access information, social support, and social services by utilizing various social networks and thus increase their adaption to the host society. The data comes from in-depth interviews with 5 voluntary participants. So far, social network studies have examined the differences in the types of social networks that migrants make by paying primary attention to the form, structure, and properties of their social relationships, and developed various conceptual frameworks, such as strong ties vs. weak ties and bonding capital vs. bridging capital. However, past studies tended to apply the dichotomous conceptual frameworks or to consider the nature of social networks static, rather than dynamic, and consequently failed to examine the process of social networks formation and the complex, overlapping properties of social networks. Findings show that Korean language proficiency is a key for them to build various social ties beyond family boundaries. With the passage of time, they gradually have formed and expanded various social networks in their neighborhoods, the ethnic networks, and linking social capital. Ethnic networks are chosen in response to their experience of social exclusion and blocked opportunities in Korean society, or as a family strategies for promoting their small business. Meanwhile, marriage migrant women access social services by contacting private organizations or public institutions as a way of overcoming relatively poor family resources and living their meaningful lives. Multicultural social policies aiming for their active integration into Korean society provide opportunities for marriage migrants to easily utilize public services through their contacts with private organizations or public institutions. Yet linking social capital formed unanticipatedly through this process is often a reactive result reflecting their vulnerabilities to domestic violence, poverty and other problems in life. Nevertheless, linking social capital provides with an opportunity to expand ethnic networks in which they can gain social support and learn to overcome the vulnerabilities in life. This findings suggest that future research on marriage migrant women should account for the configulation of their various social networks, the process of multidimensional social network formation.
