어느 장례지도사의 생애: 죽음과 마주하는 삶

국문 초록

본 연구는 어느 장례지도사의 경험에 대한 생애사 연구이다. 심층적 인터뷰를 통하여 주관적인 내면세계를 탐색하고 생애 경험을 통해 장례지도사의 삶을 깊이 있게 이해하고 그에 연결된 사회문화적 맥락을 탐색하는 데 목적을 두었다. 연구를 위하여 현재 장례지도사로 근무하는 50대 여성이 연구 참여자로 참여하였고, Mandelbaum(1973)이 제시한 세 개의 분석개념인 ‘삶의 영역’, ‘전환점’, ‘적응’에 따라 분석하였다. 연구 결과 삶의 영역은 “죽음과 마주치는 삶”, “봉사하는 삶”, “염을 할 수밖에 없는 운명”으로, 전환점은 “엄마의 죽음”, “장례지도사로 살기로 하다”, “연구 참여자 ‘이귀인’ ”으로, 적응은 “배웅하는 사람”, “위로하는 사람”, “마주치던 죽음에서 마주하는 죽음으로”로 도출하였다. 이러한 연구 결과에 근거하여 심리 내적으로는 자신의 삶을 어떻게 받아들이는지와 성찰하는지를 통해 연구 참여자의 치료적 변화를 끌어냈다. 또한 주관적 내면세계에 대하여 심리학적 해석과 통찰을 제공하였다. 이는 향후 장례지도사가 되고자 하는 사람이나 혹은 장례지도사로 살아가는 사람들에게 생생한 경험과 사회문화적 맥락을 들려주고, 정보제공의 역할도 하며, 연구 참여자가 적극적인 행위자로 자신의 생애를 재구성할 수 있다는 데 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to look into the experience of a funeral director. The purpose was to explore the subjective inner world through in-depth interviews and to explore the social and cultural context associated with the life experience of the funeral director in depth. This study was a life-history research. For the purpose of the study, middle-aged women who currently work as funeral director participated and analysis was conducted, with the concept of ‘Dimension of Life’, ‘Turning Points ‘ and ‘Adaptation’ presented by Mandelbaum(1973). The first category was ‘Dimension of Life’ and included 3 theme clusters such as “Life encountering death”, “Life of service”, “Unavoidable destiny”. The second category was ‘Turning Points ‘ and included 3 theme clusters such as “The death of mother”, “Living as a funeral director”, “Participant, Lee”. The third category was ‘Adaptation’ and included 3 theme clusters such as “Role of sending off people”, “Role of consoler ”, “From Encountering death to Facing death”. Based on these findings, therapeutic changes was drawn from the participants through her reflection on how she accepted her life psychologically. It also provided psychological interpretation and insight into the subjective inner world. The study is meaningful as it can help those who intend to become funeral directors or are working as funeral directors, can share vivid experiences and social and cultural context, can be an information provider, and that research participants can reconstruct their lives as active actors.
