국문 초록

고대 중국의 봉건제와 오복제에서 유래한 ‘기전’이란 명칭은 ‘경기’라는 이름의 별칭으로 사용되어 왔다. 고려시대에 당나라의 경기제가 공식적으로 수용되면서 한국에는 ‘경기’라는 명칭과 함께 ‘기전’이라는 이름의 사용이 증가하게 되어 현재에 이르고 있다. 본고는 왕성 중심의 봉건적 질서를 내면화하고 있는 ‘기전’ 명칭의 유래와 의미를 문헌 중심으로 분석한 후, 이 이름이 경기도의 지명 언중들에게 수용되면서 보통명사에서 점차 일정한 위치와 영역을 가진 고유명사의 지명으로 형성되어가는 과정을 영역 정체성의 관점에서 조사하였다. 연구 결과, 나말여초의 10세기 초반에 문헌에 등장하기 시작한 기전은 ‘왕성 주변 지역’을 가리키는 보통명사로 쓰이다가, 고려 1108년의 경기제 채택, 조선 초 경기 영역의 확대와 지방행정구역인 ‘경기도’의 강화 과정을 거치면서 일정한 위치와 영역을 가진 지명으로 성장하였다. 특히 19세기에 이르러 기전 지명은 경기를 대신하는 공식 지명으로도 사용되다가, 구한말, 일제강점기, 지방자치제도 실시(1995)를 거쳐 현재에 이르면서 영역 정체성을 구축하려는 시도가 진행되고 있다.

영문 초록

The name Gijeon (畿甸) originated from feudalism and Five domains system (五 服) in the ancient China has been used as an another name of the name Gyeonggi (京畿). After the Gyeonggi system (京畿制) of the Tang (唐) dynasty had been officially adopted from the China in the Goryeo dynasty, the name usage of ‘ Gyeonggi ’ and ‘ Gijeon ’ has been increased. This article aims to examine the origin and meaning of the name ‘ Gijeon ’ through a literature-based research, and then to investigate the changing process from it as a common noun to a toponym as a proper noun, while the toponym speakers in the Gyeonggi-do province have been recognizing the its meaning from a perspective of a territorial identity. The result of this study is as following. First, the name Gijeon had started to record in some ancient writings as a common noun signifying ‘an area around the capital of a kingdom’ in the early 10 th century. Second, going through series of processes such as the adoption of the Gyeonggi system in 1108, the territory expansion of Gyeonggi , and the strengthening of functions of the local administrative district Gyeonggi-do in the early Joseon dynasty, the name Gijeon has been developed into a toponym that has a certain location and territory. In particular, in the 19 th century, the name Gijeon had become a official name replacing the administrative district name Gyeonggi and Gyeonggi-do. Since then, the inhabitants of the Gyeonggi-do have been endeavoring to construct a territorial identity of Gyeonggi and Gijeon from the end of Korean Empire, Japanese colonial era, and the launch of the autonomous local government system in 1995 to the present.
