내한 선교사 번하이슬(C. F. Bernheisel 1874-1958)의 가톨릭교회 비판

국문 초록

이 글은 1900년에 한국에 온 내한 선교사였으며 산정현교회의 초대 목사이자 평양 장로회 신학교 교수였던 번하이슬(C. F. Bernheisel)의 신학을 살피는 것이다. 특히 이 논문의 목적은 먼저 가톨릭교회에 대한 그의 비판을 살펴보고 분석하는 것이다. 또한 번하이슬의 천주교에 대한 비판이 가지고 있는 신앙적이고 정치적인 동기는 무엇이었는지 밝히려고 한다. 번하이슬의 가톨릭 비판을 통해서 초기 내한 선교사들의 가톨릭교회에 대한 생각을 알아보고, 현대 한국 개신교가 가지고 있는 가톨릭교회에 대한 평가가 한국 교회 초기 내한 선교사들의 영향임을 보여주고자 한다. 마지막 으로 본 연구는 초기 한국 개신교와 가톨릭교회와의 충돌과 반목이 있었음에도 불구하고 현대 한국 개신교는 가톨릭교회와 교회 일치 운동을 진행해나가야 한다는 것을 말하려고 한다.

영문 초록

The aim of this paper is to investigate the theological thoughts of C. F. Bernheisel (1867-1951), especially his view of the Catholic Church. Bernheisel was an outstanding missionary from the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A, the first pastor and co-founder of ‘Sanjunghyeon’ Church in 1902 and a professor at the Pyeongyang Union Theological Seminary. He strongly criticized the Catholic Church in many articles published in the 1930's. The first goal of this study is to examine his view of the Catholic Church, based on his articles which were published in ‘TheTheological Review’ 「神學指南」in the 1930's.Secondly. this study tries to show that the Korean Reformed Church‘s views of the Catholic Church, which dominate in the Korean Church until the present day, were strongly influenced by missionaries like C. F. Bernheisel.Thirdly, this study tries to explain the religious and political motivation behind Bernheisel's critique of the Catholic Church during the Japanese colonial period. Finally, this study will try to find opportunities for cooperation and an ecumenical movement with the Catholic Church in the future, despite the very exclusive and intolerant attitude of the Korean Reformed Church towards the Catholic Church from the beginning of the Korean Mission
