“Chohan” (Avena sativa L.), a winter forage oat was released by the Honam Agricultural Research Institute (HARI), NICS, RDA in 2006. “Chohan” was selected from the cross between “Early 80” and “7A 202.210-S”. “Early 80” is a accession from Japan that showed high forage yield, while “7A 202.210-S” is a winter oat line that was obtained from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Subsequent generations followed by the cross were handled in bulk and pedigree selection programs at Suwon. A line, “SO95016-B-GB-39-13-1”, was selected for earliness and good agronomic characteristics and designated as a line name of “Gwiri 49” and finally named as “Chohan”. “Chohan” was subsequently evaluated for winter hardiness, earliness, and forage yield in six locations, Yeoncheon, Suwon, Yesan, Cheongwon, Iksan, and Kimjae, from 2003 to 2006. Over 4 years, the average forage yield of “Chohan” harvested at milk-ripe stage was 10.7 ton ha-1, compared with 10.0 ton ha-1 for the check cultivar “Samhan”. “Chohan” is about 4 days earlier than the check cultivar for heading date. “Chohan” is adapted primarily for winter planting use in the southern regions of Republic of Korea.
