This paper explores the impact of offshoring on the performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Using unique Korean firm-level data, we find that SMEs benefit from overseas relocation of production. Empirical evidence shows that such relocation has significantly positive impacts on productivity when firms choose to offshore to
ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) through external suppliers rather than foreign affiliates. These results suggest that it may be suitable for SMEs to choose global engagement in order to take advantage of lower transaction costs.
