영문 초록

This thesis is to elucidate how the ideology of 1920 could influence the women’s fashions in America and Korea, and compare its differences between the two countries with the qualitative analysis of the fashion in flapper and modern girl in light of the 1920’s ideology. The method of investigation was theoretical review along with the comparative study. As the industrialization and urbanization, with the help of the technology had granted the women the chance of leasure and education, contributing to their engagement in the economic activity and lead to their pursuing the liberation and freedom. Firstly, the America flappers preferred to take the corset off and wear the short skirts. The modern girl in Korea wanted to be free from the social enforcement realized in the costumes and hair style. Secondly, the Art Deco style might influence the characteristics of the flapper and modern girl costumes in this way. Flapper look had the straight silhouette from the flat chest to the hemline with the knee length skirt. Modern girl look in Korea was interested in long length ‘Chogori’ and also straight silhouettes of the midi length ‘Chima’, with suspender. The hair style was bobbed hair representing the typical style both countries, resulting in the boyish look. Thirdly, in America the flapper look was widely started among the middle class women with economic privileges, finally expanded to other ages and social status in conditions of the affluent materials and capitalism while in Korea the modern girl fashion was observed only in the limited group with the economic powers, being scarcely found in the other groups. This change of the costume in both countries undertook the common significance of the free liberation of the women from the society of sexual discrimination while there are some differences between them, in America, the influences are widespread to the other states finally be popular in taking the clothes because of the affluent economic conditions, while in Korea, only to give the message of the ideology, being not to be popular among the most of the women, on the background of economic and social situation due to the Japanese colonialism.
