『유럽문명의 역사』를 통해 본 프랑수아 기조(François Guizot)의 문명관과 이슬람

국문 초록

이 글은 19세기 자유주의 사상가이자 프랑스 7월 왕정의 정치가로 알려진 프랑수아 기조의 문명관 분석을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 정치가나 사상가가 아닌 역사가 기조의 대표 저작인 『유럽문명의 역사』를 토대로 비유럽문명과의 과감한 비교를 통해 부각된 유럽문명에 대한 저자의 관점과 서술을 분석한다. 기조의 문명 개념은 우선 두 가지 요소, 즉 사회의 발전과 인간 자체의 진보로 구성된다. 기조에게 유럽문명이 특별한 이유는 무엇인가? 기조는 타문명과 달리 유럽문명이 왕정, 귀족정, 민주정 등의 다양한 사회적 원리들의 상호 경쟁을 통해 역설적으로 역동성과 풍요로움을 확보할 수 있었다고 주장한다. 나아가 이러한 특징으로 말미암아 진보와 자유의 원리를 발전하면서 유럽문명은 근대에 이르러 보편성의 지위에 도달하고, “거대한 우주의 드라마”를 쓰게 되었다는 것이다. 그런 점에서 유럽문명의 역사는 보편적인 인류문명의 궁극적인 미래를 예언하고 있는 것으로 간주된다. 기조는 문명의 개념을 역사화하고 다른 문명, 특히 이슬람 문명을 비교한다. 이슬람에 대한 그의 태도는 이중적인데, 그는 무슬림을 야만인으로 규정하면서도 과거 이들의 문명이 유럽보다 앞서있었음을 강조한다. 그러나 이슬람 문명에 대한 그의 최종적인 분석은 ‘화려한 과거, 초라한 현재’로 요약되면서 ‘보잘 것 없는 과거, 역동적인 현재, 장밋빛 미래’로 요약되는 유럽문명과 극적인 대비를 이루게 된다. 18세기의 신조어인 문명이란 단어를 역사적 개념으로 탈바꿈시킨 기조는 개별 문명을 넘어서는 진보하는 보편문명의 역사적 실재를 유럽문명을 통해 가시화시키고 있다.

영문 초록

The study intends to analyse the concept of civilization of Francois Guizot, politician of the Monarchy of July and liberalist thinker of the 19th century. The paper examines his famous historical work, L Histoire de la civilisation en Europe, in which the author considered the European civilization as the avant-garde of the universal civilization by different comparison with the others, like the Islam. Guizot s definition of civilisation consists of two factors: development of society on the one hand, progress of humanity on the other. What makes the european civilization so special? It is, according to Guizot, the coexistence of diverse social principal like monarchy, aristocracy, democracy and their competition which makes the civilization so dynamic and rich. Guizot asserts those features did produce the progressive principal, the Liberty. As a result, European civilization has arrived, in the modern age, at the stage of universality, a gigantic drama of the Universe . For this conclusion, he tries to historicize the concept of civilization and compare it with other civilization, especially the Islam. His attitude on it is ambivalent. He described the muslims as barbarians, yet their civilization as advanced one. But his analysis on the contemporary Islamic civilization goes no further. His diagnosis of Islamic civilization, summed up as Splendid past, shabby present is dramatically contrasted with the shabby past, dynamic present and the rosy future of European civilization. The Civilization, 18th century s neologism, Guizot made a historical concept. He premised the historical existence of a universal civilization in progress over individual civilizations. Despite the title of his History of Civilization in Europe, he was likely to suggest the ultimate future of a Universal civilization for humankind.
