한국어 관형어의 영어번역 양상에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 명사구 수식어로서 명사구를 풍부하게 만들어주는 관형어가 영어 원어민화자들은 어떻게 번역하는지 한영 병렬언어자료를 통해 알아보고자 한다. 분석한 병렬언어자료는 신경숙(2010)의「어디선가 나를 찾는 전화벨이 울리고」의 번역본 I’ll be right there(2013)과 김영하(2006)의 「빛의 제국」의 번역본 Your republic is calling you(2010)이다. 분석한 두 소설에서 관형어는 총 344개가 발견되었으며, 그 중 생략과의 역된 74개를 제외한 270개 관형어를 연구 대상으로 하였으며, 관형어의 종류에 따라 수식하는 위치와 수식어를 분류하였다. 한국어와 영어의 구조적 차이에 의하여 한국어에서는 관형어가 항상 핵명사 앞에 위치하지만 영어에서는 핵명사를 중심으로 앞뒤에 위치하여 수식하거나 한정하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 이러한 차이로 인하여 관형어의 한영 번역시 세 가지 차이점이 나타난다. 첫째, 동사 관형어와 형용사 관형어에 주어나 목적어 논항이 있는 경우는 영어로 명사후 수식어인 관계절, 분사 또는 전치사로 번역이 되었다. 세 수식어 모두 동사 관형어나 형용사 관형어 안에 주어나 목적어 논항이 있다는 공통점이 있기에 각각의 수식어들이 영어로 어떻게 번역되는지 살펴보았다. 둘째, 관형어가 영어로 번역시 어순의 차이가 나타나는 경우가 있다. 그래서 어순의 차이가 나타나는 관형어를 명사전 수식어와 명사후 수식어로 나뉘어서 번역유형을 살펴보았다. 셋째, 한국어에서는 나타나지 않으나 영어로 번역시 나타나는 수식어로 관사, 소유대명사, 양화사, 지시사가 나타났다. 각각의 수식어들의 수식위치와 번역유형을 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

This study aims to analyze English translation patterns of Korean noun modifiers, in an attempt to identify noun modifiers. To accomplish the purpose of the study, translation corpus was analyzed. 344 sentences with modifiers were selected from two popular novels to study how to translate Korean to English in the translation and modifiers were included overlapping parts in each sentence. In Korean, all noun modifiers are located in front of the head nouns, but in English, they are located around the head nouns. These differences led to three aspects of the translation of noun modifiers.ⅰ) If the subject or object argument is included among verb or adjective modifiers, it is translated into relative clauses, participle or prepositions as a post-nominal modifier. ⅱ) The word order in the modifier was changed when the noun modifier in Korean was translated into a pre-nominal modifier and a post-nominal modifier. When a noun modifier is translated into the pre-nominal modifier, it is changed by the modifying order of a pre-nominal or adjective, and when translated into the post-nominal modifier, it is changed into two equal clauses. ⅲ) Although noun modifiers do not appear too regularly in Korean, determiners such as articles, possessive pronoun, quantifier and demonstrative were found in English.
