일본 근세 지식인의 ‘풍경’ 인식 고찰 :스즈키 보쿠시(鈴木牧之)의 『호쿠에쓰셋푸(北越雪譜)』를 중심으로

국문 초록

본고에서는 스즈키 보쿠시의 􋺷호쿠에쓰셋푸􋺸의 무대인 에치고(越後)의 지역적인 특징에서 생긴 ’눈(雪)’에 대한 독특한 인식을 중심으로 살펴보고, 􋺷호쿠에쓰셋푸􋺸에 기록되어 있는 생활 속의 ‘풍경’에 관한 기술을 통해서 여행 중의 ‘풍경’과는 다른 생활 속에서의 ‘풍속’ 묘사의 특징을 확인해 보았다. 저자 스즈키 보쿠시는 메이와(明和) 7년 에치고의 시오자와(塩沢)에서 태어나, 여러 재능과 다방면에 능통하여 당시의 일류 문인들과 교류가 있었다. 그의 의식 속에는 도시사람들의 여행만을 통해서는 지방의 ‘풍속’의 본질을 파악하기 쉽지 않다는 의식이 있었기 때문에, [호쿠에쓰셋푸]를 통해 설국 에치고에서 ‘눈’을 극복하면서 생활하는 사람들의 삶의 모습을 에 도사람들에게 전하려고 했다. 그는 시가에서 노래되고 있는 ‘눈’은 실제 생활 속에서의 ‘눈’의 모습과는 매우 다르다는 것, 또 도회에서 보는 ‘눈’과 설국에서 보는 ‘눈’과의 차이를 적절한 설화와 모노가타리, 그리고 다양한 예를 들면서 이야기하고 있다. 스즈키 보쿠시의 이와 같은 이야기는 도회의 사람들에 대해, 설국에 대한 이해를 호소하고 있는 것이고, 자신이 태어나고 자란 설국의 실정을 도시 사 람들도 알아줬으면 하는 의도가 담겨 있었다. 와카(和歌) 속에 등장하는 명소를 여행할 때는 와카 속에서 노래한 가인의 정서를 떠올리며, 그 가인의 기분을 자신도 동화하면서 느끼려고 하고, 역사적인 전장에 이르러서는 전장에서 전사한 사람들을 애도하거나 한다. 그러나 이와 같은 고전 작품 속의 배경을 돌아보는 여행은 명소의 확인과 나열에 빠지지 쉽다. 이런 경우 여행자는 고전작품의 배경이 되었던 풍경 을 보는 것에만 열중하게 되고 마을의 진정한 풍경을 놓치게 된다. 스즈키 보쿠시는 여행자들이 지방 사람들의 살아가는 모습에도 눈을 돌릴 필요가 있다고 주장하고 있다. 이처럼 여행은 지식인에 의해 풍아로운 놀이의 성격도 가지고 있지만, 스즈키 보쿠시는 그 ‘풍경’의 이면에 있는 사람들의 살아가는 모습도 봐 주기를 원했고, ‘눈’ 속에서 ‘눈’과 함께 싸우면서 생활하는 설국의 사람들의 분투하는 모습을 도시 사람들에게 전하려고 했던 것이다.

영문 초록

In this thesis, we have examined the unique perception of ‘snow that was born out of the local characteristics of Echigo, which is the stage of Hokuetsu Seppu by Bokushi Suzuki, and compared it with the characteristics of the ‘landscape’ described in the travel records of the time through the description of the ‘landscape’ in the life of local people recorded in Hokuetsu Seppu in an effort to identify the difference. The author Bokushi Suzuki, who was born at Shiozawa of Echigo in the 7th year of Meiwa, possessed talents in various fields and had an exchange with the first-rate writers of the time. In his consciousness, there was an awareness that it was not easy for towns people to understand the nature of local “customs only through their trips. Therefore, through Hokuetsu Seppu, he tried to convey the real story of the people living in Echigo, the Snow Country, overcoming the ‘snow to the people of Edo. He stated that the ‘snow’ mentioned in Japanese poetry is very different from the ‘snow’ that is found in daily life of local people, and explained the difference in the ‘snow’ imagined in the cities and the ‘snow’ actually experienced in the snow country through various tales and by quoting a number of examples. This story of Bokushi Suzuki appeals to towns people to have a genuine understanding of snow country, and is intended to urge towns people to know the real situation of the snow country where he was born and grew himself. When traveling to places of interest appearing in Japanese poetry, we often recall the sentiment of the poet who wrote the poems trying to sympathize with him or her, and when visiting a historical battle ground, we often mourn for the persons who died in the battle. However, on such visits of tourist attractions, we are often prone to just check the sites to add them on our list of famous places we have visited. We pay too much attention to the landscape that served as the background of historical works and miss the true landscape of the village we visit. Bokushi Suzuki claims that travelers need to look into the lives of the local people who actually live there. Such a travel has the character of a pleasure trip for the modern intellectuals, but Bokushi Suzuki wanted them to see the people living in the back of the ‘landscape and wanted to convey the image of the people in the snow country who are fighting with the ‘snow’ in their everyday life to the towns people.
