지역적 환경에 따라 프란치스코 교황이 어떻게 받아들여지는 지를 고려하기 위해서는 그의 인성과 리더십 유형, 그리고 가르 침을 살펴보아야 한다. 그는 미국에서, 특히 그의 인성과 스타일에 있어서 매우 환대를 받았지만, 그럼에도 최근에는 소위 “보수적”이라고 불리는 가톨릭 신자들로부터 그의 가르침에 대한 의문점들이 제기되고 있다. 한편으로, 다수의 신학자들이 자신들의 신학적 관점에서, 특히 교회에 대한 학문인 교회론에 있어서 교황의 가르침을 신학적으로 반영하기도 했다. 프란치스코 교황에 대한 미국에서의 수용, 즉 환대와 질문 그리고 탐색은 여러 가지 문제들을 둘러싸고 나타나는 미국 가톨릭교회의 양극화를 여실히 드러내며, 그중 다수는 국가 차원에서의 양극화와도 관련이 있다.

영문 초록

To consider the reception of Pope Francis in different local settings invites consideration of his personality, leadership style, and his teachings. In the US, he has been largely welcomed, especially his personality and style, though lately there has been more questioning of his teaching, mostly from Catholics often called “conservative.” Meanwhile, a number of theologians have also engaged his teachings in their own theological reflection, especially in ecclesiology, the theology of the church. The US reception of Francis — welcoming, questioning, and engaging — also reveals polarization in the US Catholic Church around a number of issues, many of them linked to national polarization more generally.
