국문 초록

본고는 “자비의 외교”가 지닌 특징을 설명한다. 이는 최근 몇년간 프란치스코 교황의 지정학(地政學)적 이해가 빚어 낸 결과 로서, 여기서는 이 뿌리를 살펴보고자 한다. 자비의 힘은 역사적 흐름들의 의미를 바꾸어 놓았는데, 민족과 국가 간의 관계에 대해 말할 때조차 그 어떤 것도, 그리고 그 누구도 완전히 “상실된”것으로 여겨지지 않는 모습에서 그러한 점을 살펴볼 수 있다. 이런 점에서 교황이 여러 상황들 및 국제적 위기에 직면했을 때 어째서 경직된 해석을 지지하지 않고, 자유로운 운신으로써 행동하며, 사회적 평화와 상처 받기 쉬운 취약한 이들에 대한 수용에 초점을 맞추는 등 다양하고 다극적으로 사고하였는지 이해할 수있다.

영문 초록

The article describes and traces the roots of the features of a “diplomacy of mercy” which Pope Francis’ geopolitical understanding has woven in recent years. The power of mercy changes the meaning of historical processes: no thing and no one is ever to be considered as definitely “lost” even when speaking of relations between peoples and nations. This is precisely the reason which permits us to understand why the Pope never stands for rigid interpretations when dealing with situations and international crisis, but instead he chooses to have a multi-faceted and multi-polar vision, acting with great freedom of movement, focusing on the social peace and the inclusion of the most vulnerable.
