귀국 유학생의 유학경험에 대한 의미 구성

국문 초록

본 연구는 귀국 유학생들이 유학 과정에서 어떠한 경험을 하였고, 귀국 후 지금-여기라는 삶의 위치에서 유학이 그들에게 어떠한 의미를 가지는지에 대하여 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 해외에서 유학을 마치고 귀국하여 현재 한국에 정착하여 생활하고 있는 10명의 귀국 유학생들과의 면담을 진행하였고, 수집된 자료에 대하여 Moustakas가 제안한 현상학적 분석절차를 기본틀로 활용하여 분석 및 해석을 진행하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 연구참여자들의 유학 경험의 핵심적인 의미는 ‘나’의 잠재성을 ‘행함’으로 확인함으로써 ‘나’를 규정해나가는 ‘주체-화 과정’인 것으로 밝혀졌다. 연구참여자들은 ‘기분 좋은 상상’, 즉 지금보다 더 ‘괜찮은 나’에 대한 바람과 기대를 가지고 유학을 떠났다. 낯선 세계에서 그들은 그곳의 언어를 열심히 배우고 그곳에 이미 자리 잡고 익숙하게 살고 있는 타자들과 소통하면서 주류 세계의 문화를 적극적으로 받아들임으로써 자신의 몸을 세계에 맞추며 길들였고, 그 과정에서 그곳은 그들이 거주할 수 있는 익숙한 공간으로 길들여지게 되었다. 그 결과, 그들은 유학생다운 유학생이 된다. 연구참여자들로 하여금 힘든 유학 과정을 버티고 ‘나’를 세워나갈 수 있게 한 자원으로는 자신을 인정해주는 타자와의 ‘만남’과 잠재되어있는 또 다른 ‘나’를 ‘봄’으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 연구참여자들은 한국 이라는 독특한 사회적 구조 내 지금-여기에서 ‘돌아봄’의 과정을 통과하면서 유학생다운 유학생으로서의 ‘몸의 스케마’에 관계적, 사회적 경험들이 덧붙여짐에 따라 ‘주체-됨’의 차이 생성을 반복하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 특히, 그들이 차지할 수 있었던 또는 잡을 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 소원하는 사회적 차원에서의 이름-자리는 유학 경험에 대한 해석과 의미부여에 결정적인 영향을미치고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 본 연구자는 유학생을 이해하고 적절한 도움을 제공하기 위해서는 원인과 결과라는 선형적인 틀을 넘어서, 자기인식을 지속적으로 변화시키고 만들어가는 주체-화 과정이라는 실존적 관점에서 유학 과정을 이해할 필요가 있다고 제안하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning of the experiences of studying abroad for returned students who are now staying in the nation. Data was collected through interviews with 10 returned students and was then analyzed, using Clark Moustakas’phenomenological qualitative research methods. The findings showed that the core meaning of the experience of studying abroad was “the process of subjectivation” to defi ne themselves by identifying their potentials with ‘doing’. Research participants went abroad with ‘a pleasant hope’ that they would ‘grow up’to be a better self. In unfamiliar environments, they worked hard to get adjusted to and fi t into, studying hard to learn the language and actively accept the mainstream culture while communicating with others, and came to be genuine international students. Meeting with others who acknowledged them and also ‘seeing’ true self were the key drivers for them to build their ‘self identity’. Th ey said they repeatedly generated diff erences of “becoming a subject”, as relationships and social experiences were added to ‘body schematic’ in the course of refl ection within the unique social structure of Korea, here and now. In particular, “the name-position” of the social dimension that they could or hope to occupy, had a decisive impact on interpreting and implying meaning to it. Based on the fi ndings of this study, it can be suggested that it is signifi cant to understand the experience of studying abroad from the view of “the process of subjectivation”, beyond the linear frame of cause and eff ect.
