북한이주민의 건강과 경제적응의 관계

국문 초록

본 연구는 국내 북한이주민의 건강상태가 경제적용에 미치는 영향에 대해서 조사하였다. 선행연구에서도 북한이주민의 건강상태와 질병이환에 대해서 연구된 바 있으나 대부분의 연구가 소규모의 표본과 편의조사에 기초하여 조사하여 연구결과를 일반화하는데 제한이 많았다. 이런 자료의 문제점을 해결하기 위해 본 연구에서는 통일부와 지역사회복지관의 협조를 얻어 1997년부터 2004년 12월 31일까지 입국하여 현재 국내 지역사회에 정착하여 생활하고 있는 13세 이상의 5,177명의 북한이주민들을 대상으로 확률표본조사를 실시하여 1,336명으로부터 유효 응답을 확보하였다. 또한 선행연구가 건강문제와 경제적응을 연관시켜서 분석하지 못한 한계를 극복하기 위해 본 연구는 북한이주민의 현재 건강상태를 기술하는데 그치지 않고 건강상태가 경제적응 수준에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다 조사 결과 북한이주민이 미취업 이유로 제시된 것 중 가장 높은 비율을 차지한 것은 건강 때문으로 전체 유효응답의 35.5%를 차지하여 일을 하고 싶지만 기회가 없어서(12.3%)보다 3배 가까운 높은 비율을 나타냈다. 또한 상당수의 북한이주민들이 북한에서 사는 동안 또는 탈북 과정에서 충격적인 경험을 하였고, 그로 인해 정신적 스트레스가 심하고 그 후유증으로 일상생활을 하는데 어려움을 겪는 것으로 나타났다. 국민기초생활보장수급 여부를 경제적응 수준의 지표로 삼고 이를 종속변수로 놓고 이것에 영향을 마치는 인구통계학적, 사회계층 변수들을 통제한 후 로지스틱 회귀분석을 실시한 결과 건강상태가 생계비 수급 여부에 유의미한 효과를 갖는 것으로 나타났다

영문 초록

This study examines the effects of health status of North Korean migrants on their economic adaptation. Previous research on health status and illness of North Korean migrants has relied on small or convenient samples and thus its findings are difficult to generalize to the North Korean migrants population. To overcome this problem, we conducted in July through September, 2005 a large sample survey of 1,336 North Korean migrants ages 13 and older in South Korea with the help of the Ministry of National Unification and local social service centers. Also, in contrast to previous research that did not look at the relationship between health and economic adaptation, this study analyzes how individual health status affects his or her economic adaptation The results show that 35.5% of the respondents referred to their poor health as the main reason for unemployment. The majority of the respondents also mentioned health problems as one of the three most serious problems they face in South Korea. Similarly, they attributed their lack of will to work to health problems as well as South Korean residents prejudice against North Korean migrants. Thus, health problems reduce their will to work, lower their chance of employment, and hinder their social adaptation. In a logistic regression analysis that examines the independent effect of health status after controlling for demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents, poor health is found to increase significantly the chance of relying on government subsidy
