영문 초록

The definition of conflict used in problemsolving approaches is very wide. Conflicts are not ‘builtin’ to any particular structure, but rather evolve out of the interactions between the relevant parties. Conflict, therefore, is interactional. In the conflict management and the problemsolving approach the third party is to be utilized in such a manner as ‘to transform the conflict from confrontation to a problemsolving exercise’. This transformation can be achieved when a third party, emphasizing the needs of resolution and acting as a catalyst and facilitator, introduces ‘knowledge about the nature of conflict generally, the problem of perception, the processes of escalation, the confusion between role behavior and personality, the errors in costing objectives and other aspects of it’. As a conflict management strategy aimed at the attitudinal-cognitive components of a conflict relationship, the entire process can be conceived as having two dimensions, (a) the understanding process, and (b) the solving process. The understanding process refers to the parties’ efforts to attain an understanding of their interaction that is coherent, adequate, rational, and wellconnected to their external environment. The solving process refers to a process of search through a space of alternative decisions, their evaluation and an agreement on a single, mutuallypreferred alternative.
