중학생의 그릿 변화와 관련된 가정·학교 환경요인 탐색

국문 초록

본 연구는 장기적인 성취를 예측하는 것으로 알려진 그릿의 두 가지 하위변인인 끈기와 흥미유지를 탐색함으로써 청소년의 장기적인 목표달성에 도움이 되는 가정환경(자유로운 의사소통, 새롭고 다양한 경험권장, 엄격한 규칙과 지시적 분위기)과 학교환경(친구지지와 즐거운 반분위기, 교사의 지지와 자유로운 의사소통, 엄격한 규칙과 지시적 분위기)이 무엇인지 알아보는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 4개 중학교 2학년 483명을 대상으로 설문을 실시한 후 기초통계, 상관, 위계적 다중회귀 등의 방법을 사용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 주요결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 본 연구에 포함된 개인특성 및 가정·학교환경요인의 대부분은 학년초 끈기를 정적으로 예측하였고 설명력에 있어서 가정환경과 학교환경의 차이가 크지 않았다. 둘째, 학년초 끈기와 다르게 학년초 흥미유지를 예측하는 가정·학교환경요인은 가정에서의‘엄격한 규칙과 지시적 분위기’만이 부적인 예측변인이었다. 셋째, 학년초 그릿 점수를 통제한 후 학년말 그릿을 살펴본 결과 가정·학교환경요인 중 가정에서의‘새롭고 다양한 경험권장’과 학교에서의‘친구지지와 즐거운 반분위기’가 학년말 끈기를 정적으로 예측하였으며, 학년말 흥미유지는 가정에서의‘엄격한 규칙과 지시적 분위기’에 의해서 정적으로, 학교에서의‘엄격한 규칙과 지시적 분위기’에 의해서는 부적으로 예측되는 것으로 나타났다. 종합하면 청소년기의 그릿을 예측하는 가정환경과 학교환경은 비슷한 정도의 영향력을 보였으며, 그릿의 두 가지 하위요소인 끈기와 흥미유지에 대한 예측 요인은 다르게 나타났다. 또한 가정 및 학교환경요인에 따라 학년초에 비하여 학년말에 그릿이 변화할 수 있다는 것을 보여주었다. 따라서 학생들의 그릿 증진을 위해서는 효과적인 가정 및 학교환경요인이 제공되어야 함을 시사하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to identify home contextual characteristics (free communication, opportunity for new/diverse experience, and strict rules/directive atmosphere) and school contextual characteristics (peer support/positive climate, teacher support/free communication, and strict rules/directive atmosphere) that help adolescents achieve their long-term goals, through exploring two sub-factors of grit, perseverance of effort and consistency of interest. A survey was conducted to 483 second-grade students in four middle schools and the survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. The results are as follows. First, most personal characteristics and home/school contextual factors positively predicted students’perseverance of effort at the beginning of a school year, and no noticeable difference was found between home and school contextual factors in terms of their explanatory powers. Second, unlike perseverance of effort at the beginning of a school year, students’consistency of interest was negatively predicted only by‘strict rules/directive atmosphere’at home. Third, after controlling for initial grit scores, the‘opportunity for new and diverse experience’at home and‘peer support/positive climate’at school positively predicted students’perseverance of effort at the end of school year. Interestingly, the consistency of interest at the end of school year was predicted positively by‘strict rules/directive atmosphere’at home but negatively by‘strict rules/directive atmosphere’at school. In conclusion, home and school contextual factors showed similar explanatory powers in predicting adolescent’s grit, while significant predictors were different between perseverance of effort and consistency of interest. It was also noted that the results suggested that home and school contexts could increase or decrease students’grit during a school year, in spite of its relatively short period. This study suggested that effective contextual factors should be provided for students in order to improve their grit.
