국문 초록

이 글은 3·1운동 시기 세브란스가 어떻게 3·1운동의 중심지가 되었으며, 세브란스 출신들이 3·1운동에서 어떤 역할을 수행했는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 한국 최초의 서양식 근대병원인 제중원 설립 이후, 제중원의학교 출신들은 사회 각 분야에서 지도적인 역할을 수행했다. 그들은 3·1운동 이전부터 의료활동과 선교활동에 그치지 않고, 한국의 문명개화와 고등교육에서 선도적인 역할을 수행했다. 3·1운동 전후 세브란스인들이 한국사회에서 다양한 역할을 수행하게 된 데에는 제중원의학교와 세브란스연합의학전문학교 등이 지닌 정치사회적인 독특한 위상과 관련되어 있다. 우선 제중원과 세브란스병원은 기독교 선교기관이자 의료기관으로서 외국인뿐만 아니라 외부인들도 손쉽게 왕래할 수 있는 정치사회적 거점이 되어 있었다. 주로 기독교계 인사들이 세브란스병원을 중심으로 독립운동에 관한 논의를 전개했다. 또한 제중원과 세브란스병원은 교직원, 의사, 간호사, 학생, 환자 등 다양한 직군과 인물들이 모이고 교류했던 곳으로 정보수집 및 선전활동의 중요한 거점이 되었다. 특히 세브란스병원의학교 제1회 졸업생 배출 이래로 세브란스는 수많은 독립운동가를 양산했으며, 안창호, 여운형, 김구 등 독립운동가들과도 다양한 인적 교류를 형성하고 있었다. 이갑성 등 교직원들은 기독교계의 독립운동을 조직화하였고, 학생들은 YMCA 조직을 통해 3·1운동을 전국화하는 데 기여하였다. 또한 스코필드 교수 등은 3·1운동의 진상을 전세계에 알리는 역할을 수행했다. 간호부들은 가두시위 참가뿐만 아니라 수감자들의 지원, 독립운동 자금 모집 등 다양한 역할을 수행했다.

영문 초록

The paper examined how Severance Hospital and Severance Medical College became the center of the March 1st movement and what role the Severance people played in the March 1st movement. Chejungwon was the first Westernized hospital in Korea in 1885 and Chejungwon Medical School(CMS) was established in 1886. The early medical students of Severance Medical College(SMC), the successor of CMS, came to realize the need for an independence movement while treating soldiers during the process of disbanding the military in 1907. After Japan s annexation of Korea, the majority of the early graduates at SMC joined the independence movement. They used their status as doctors to raise funds and provide information for the independence movement. Severance Hospital and SMC became an advance base of the independence movement. The leading members of the Christian community began discussing independence movements at Severance Hospital, while the faculty, medical students, and nursing staff of Severance Hospital performed their roles faithfully. The medical students of SMC played an important role in the nationwide distribution of the Declaration of Independence and participation in street demonstrations through the organization of students YMCA. They distributed the Declaration of Independence around their hometown and made an important contribution to spreading information related to the national movement. Nursing students also participated in street demonstrations and engaged in various activities necessary for the independence movement, such as raising funds for the independence movement and supporting inmates.
