Polychlorinated biphenyls(PCB), used in various industries such as insulation oil, lubricant, binder and paint manufactories, are the important environmental pollutant causing serious problems in public health.
This study was performed to investigate the residues of PCB in industrial waste water and fish meal. Twenty one samples of industrial waste water collected in Suwon and Anyang area during the period of October 1985 to March 1986, and 20 samples of fish meal collected from six feed manufactories in Seoul, Gyunggi and Inchun area during the period from April to December 1985.
The levels of PCB were determined after being converted to biphenyl by dechlorination method. The results obtained were summarized as follows:
The PCB was detected in nine(42.9%) of twenty one samples of industrial waste water. The mean level was 0.30±0.39ppb(not detected -1.17ppb).
While three of the four vinyl industrial waste water contained the residues at the mean level of 0.69±0.49ppb(not detected-1.17ppb). The PCB was also detected in the waste water from one(0.36ppb) of the four machine and electronic manufactories, and two(0.53ppb and 0.62ppb) of the five glass manufactories, respectively. In addition, a sample collected from the dye, aluminium coating manufactories and a car wash contained the PCB at the levels of 0.91 ppb, 0.60ppb and 0.47ppb, respectively. But the PCB was not detected in the waste water from the paper, electric cable, cement and plating manufactories.
The PCB was detected in nineteen (95%) of twenty samples of fish meal. The mean level was 0.0340±0.0119ppm(not detected-0.0641ppm). The ranges of PCB residues in 10 domestic, 5 imported and 5 pelagic products were 0.0249-0.0641ppm(0.0373±0.0105ppm), 0.0240-0.0480ppm(0.0336±0.0095ppm), and from not detected to 0.0395ppm(0.0279±0.0163ppm), respectively.
