영국홍차의 탄생배경과 특성에 대한 연구

국문 초록

영국은 일찍이 발달한 해양 문화를 토대로 그 이전에 제해권을 장악하여 유럽의 패자로 나섰던 스페인과 네델란드를 누르고 전 세계 방방곡곡에 식민지를 경영하는 등 “해가 지지 않는 제국”으로 불리 우며, 근세 정치, 경제, 문화 등 제반 측면에서 전 지구적으로 강한 영향력을 미쳐왔고, 오늘날에도 영연방이라는 국가 집합체를 형성하여 뿌리 깊은 문화와 제도를 공유하고 있다. 역사적으로 볼 때 전 세계적으로 차의 종주국은 중국이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 해양 운송수단이 미흡했던 15세기까지는 비단길이라고 불리는 육상로(초원길과 오아시스길의 두개 통로)를 이용하여 중국의 인접 국가를 중심으로 차가 유통되었을 뿐이다. 이 육상로는 비단길이라고 불리는 유라시아의 중심 통로이며, 기원전 8세기부터 기원후 14세기까지 번성하였는데, 오아시스 길의 경우 로마까지는 연결되어 있었으나 그 당시 영국, 프랑스, 독일 등에는 직접적으로 차가 교류되지 아니하였다. 15세기 중엽 유럽인들은 탐험의 목적과 부의 추구 목적으로 대양으로 진출하였다. 그 이전 동서교역은 비단길을 통해 낙 타 운송으로 이루어졌으나, 물동량에 한계가 있어 당시 유럽에서 폭증한 동양에 대한 신비와 차를 비롯한 동양의 귀중품에 대한 수요를 충족시킬 수 없었고, 그나마 1453년부터는 터키인이 콘스탄티노플을 점령하면서 비단길을 이용한 교역도 무척 어려움을 겪게 되었다. 따라서 유럽 각국은 육로를 대신할 해로 개척에 심혈을 기울이게 되었다. 영국은 차를 매개로 하여 세계사를 뒤바꾸는 역사적 사건들을 일으키게 되는데 가장 중요한 국가적 관심 중의 하나가 차와 노동력이 풍부한 인도와 중국에 눈을 돌리게 된 것이다. 따라서 영국의 식민지 정책으로 말미암아 세계의 차문화사에 직접적으로 기록될만한 사건으로는 ‘차의 보고’인 인도를 발견하고 식민지로 경영했다는 것, 영국의 식민지였던 아메리카 대륙에서 발생하였던 ‘보스턴 차사건’, 영국이 중국에서 도발하였던 ‘아편 전쟁’ 등을 들 수 있다. 아울러 이러한 직접적 영향으로 말미암아 간접적으로 파생된 역사적 사실들로 ‘영국 홍차문화의 탄생’, ‘세계적으로 조선 및 운송기술의 향상’, ‘발효차의 대두와 성행’ 등을 선정하고 이에 대한 내용을 기술하였다.

영문 초록

The colony policy that the Great Britain leaded in the 16th century had repercussions on the modern history all over the world. The greatest country, which has been very famous for sea culture, suppressed both the Spain and Netherlands by holding maritime power, and colonialized many countries throughout the world. As a result of this, the country was called The Empire that the Sun never Sets , and has been affecting many areas such as politics, economy and culture, and then the country which formed the British Commonwealth is still sharing traditional culture. Historically, the suzerain of tea is China. However, the tea had been distributed to China s adjacent countries through the land route so called Silk Road-two passageways: Steppe and Oasis roads. The land route is the central passageway of Eurasia, which prospered from 8 B.C. to 14 A.C. but the Oasis road was linked to Rome. However, the tea, at that time, was not interchanged among countries such as the Great Britain, France or Germany. Europeans started to use sea for adventure and wealth in the 15th century. The trade was carried out through the Silk Road by using canal, but due to many limits, it can t satisfy Europeans surging needs on tea or other invaluable products. To make matters worse, people had more difficulties using the Silk Road because the Turkish conquered the Constantinople in 1453. Therefore, European countries started to focus on pioneering a seaway. While performing colonialization, the country that tried to change world history by using the tea gave rise to historical events, and one of the most interesting interest is to change their attention to both India and China which are rich in tea and labor force. Therefore, some meaningful events in the world tea culture history caused by the British colony are as follows: Boston Tea Party, The Opium War and Colonializing India. In addition, I also described some historical facts such as the birth of British Black tea culture, the improvement of shipbuilding and transportation and the introduction of fermented tea. I adopted both literate and comparative study as a research methodology. I sincerely hope that through this thesis many people recognize some facts that tea represents spiritual culture of each country and is the best beverage to drive human history.
