한국에서 재현된 동유럽 표상의 역사적 고찰

국문 초록

근대 초기와 일제 강점기에 지리적으로 먼 동유럽은 한국 대중에게 이국적인 세계였다. 당시 문학작품에 등장한 동유럽 국가들은 대중에게 호기심의 대상이기도 하였지만, 일제 강점기 조선인들에게 직면한 민족적인 문제를 환기하는 방식으로 표상되었다. 특히 폴란드는 강대국에 희생된 약소국으로서 조선의 대중들에게 피식민지인으로서의 경계와 교훈을 촉구하는 의 도로 전유되었다. 폴란드가 처했던 망국적인 상황과 저항적인 내용을 상세 하게 제시함으로써 식민지의 검열을 피하는 것과 동시에 민족적 각성을 촉구하고 이 과정에서 한국의 대중들은 동유럽 약소국과의 동병상련을 느끼며 자신들을 위로할 수 있었다. 한국전쟁이 끝난 후부터 1980년대까지 한국의 대중들은 동유럽 국가들을 반공, 반소주의 시각으로 접하였다. 반소운동을 전개한 동유럽 국가의 시민들을 동정하고 연민하며 자유 대한에 살고 있는 것을 다행으로 여겼다. 또한 1970년대 한국 대중들은 스포츠 이벤트에서 동유럽 선수들이 보여준 뛰어난 성적을 공산 국가의 비인간적 시스템과 연결 지어 이해했다. 냉전 시기 한국 대중은 동유럽 운동선수들의 모습을 통해 동유럽 적성국 국민들을 ‘기계 같은 인간’으로 인식하며 사회주의국가가 아닌 자유국가에서 사는 것에 대해 위안을 가졌던 것이다. 한편 사회주의 몰락 이후 동유럽과 한국 간의 교류가 활발해진 2000년대 TV드라마의 배경지로 자주 등장하는 동유럽은 관광적 시선으로 한국인들에게 전유된다. 특히 멜로물의 운명적인 사랑을 가능하게 하는 이국적 공간으로서 동유럽의 도시는 한국 대중에게 특별하고도 신기한 공간이라는 이미지로 재현된다. 그러면서도 한국의 대중이 동유럽 국가에 대해 냉전시기 동안 가지고 있던 이념적 경계심은 해체되지 않았음을 2000년대 빈번하게 제작되는 첩보물을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 첩보물속에 등장하는 동유럽의 도시는 한국 대중의 심리를 반영한, 관광적 호기심과 이념적 경계심이 혼합 된 표상인 것이다.

영문 초록

For exploring the perspective of Korean looking to Eastern Europe, this article examines the representations of Eastern Europe appearing in various media in Korea since the modern era. As you could see, Eastern Europe had been a region that was strictly forbidden to interact with Korea during the Cold War era. However, since 1989, when the downfall of socialism began, South Korea began diplomatic relations with the Eastern European countries. This article starts for the curiosity, what is the Korean public s view of Eastern Europe which is a popular sightseeing area for Korean and is recognized as a repository of European cultural heritage, though it was a region of hostility that maintained political tensions for 40 years, in the cold war era. In order to understand the Korean public s gaze in Eastern Europe, the focus of this article is on popular culture texts enjoyed by the public, such as poetry, novels and TV dramas could reflect the public perception, taste, and emotion. To this end, I first examine the popular gaze of Korean looking at modern Eastern Europe through articles in newspapers and poetries of the early 20thcentury. In addition, the analysis of Korean literary works during the Japanese colonial period and the Eastern European cities represented in the literary works after liberation for understanding the images of Eastern Europe that Korean has understood. Especially, by examining the Eastern European representations that appeared in Korean TV dramas since the 2000s, I identify the perspectives of Eastern Europe that modern Korean understand and analyze the psychology of Korean in that perspective.
