이순신의 서체와 성격분석 -난중일기를 중심으로-

국문 초록

본 연구는 난중일기의 원본을 기준으로 그의 서체를 서학사적 측면에서 분석하고 그 서체가 주는 의미를 이순신성격과 연결하여 설명하려는데 초점을 두고 있다. 본 설명을 위해서 먼저 16세기 말 조선의 서풍을 개괄적으로 요약하였으며, 둘째로는 이에 근거하여 이순신의 난중일기 서체를 분석하고 그 필체가 주는 느낌에 따라 그의 성격까지를 추측하였다. 그리고 마지막으로는 난중일기의 내용을 근거로 그의 서체에서 나타난 성격적 특징을 보다 구체 적으로 입증하였다. 동양서학사의 흐름은 기본적으로 중원의 고법과 이에 대한 혁신적 서풍의 갈등이었다고할 수 있다. 이를 완원의 “남북서파론”에 근거한다면 북파와 남파의 갈등이었다고도 할 수있다. 16세기 말 중국에서는 그 이전 원나라 조맹부 등에 의해 강조되었던 중원의 고법에 대한 반동으로 새로운 서풍이 동기창 등에 의해 주창되었던 시기이다. 이시기는 조선에서도 명나라와 친교하면서 중원의 고법에 근거한 북파의 서풍이 시들어지고 다시 남파류의 서풍이 만연하던 시기였다. 이 시대를 대표하는 조선의 서가는 한호였다. 따라서 이순신의 난중일기는 다분히 동 시대 한호의 서풍과 비슷한 면을 가지고 있다고할 수 있다. 그러나 한호의 서풍보다는 북파적 서풍이 보다 많이 엿보이는데 이는 그의 엄격하고 예리한 성격을 반영하는 것으로 추측된다. 뿐만 아니라 문자 배열에 있어서는 고지 식하고 답답한 면까지를 보이고 있다. 이는 이순신이 전문적인 서가가 아니었기 때문일 것이다. 그러나 일면 그의 성격이 무인으로서 호방하다기보다는 선비와 같은 세심하고 보수적인 이유에 근거하고 있다는 가능성을 보이고 있다. 이러한 이순신의 서체에 따른 성격적 추측은 그의 난중일기 내용에서 보다 구체적으로 입증되고 있다. 필자는 난중일기 내용 중 여러 부분을 인용하여 그의 성격적 특징을 보수적이며 곧음, 날카롭고 예민함, 감성적이며 세심함이라는 3가지 측면으로 요약하였다. 그리고 이러한 특징은 그의 서체에서 나타난 성격적 특징을 잘 입증하는 것이기에 매우 흥미 있는 일이라고 할 수 있다. 서체분석을 통하여 성격의 특징을 몇 가지로 요약하는 일은 매우 어려운 일이다. 그러나 이순신의 경우 그의 성격을 잘 나타내는 일기가 있었기에 그나마 가능하였다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 필자는 본

영문 초록

This study aims to illustrate the relations between Lee Soon-Shin s calligraphic style and his personality through the analysis of his diary, Nanjungilgi. In order to fulfil the purpose, I first examined the calligraphic style which was popular in Chosun dynasty in the end of 16 century. Second, I conjectured Lee Soon-Shin s personality through the analysis of his calligraphic style. And, I finally tried to prove my conjecture by analysing the contents of his diary. The historical trend of Oriental calligraphy can be summarized as an conflict between the old theory developed in the Northern China and the movement to create a new theory. This can be characterized as an conflict between Northern School and Southern School according to Wanwon s Calligraphic theory. In the end of the 16th century, a new calligraphic style as a reaction against Northern School is began to be emphasized by Dong Ki-Chang in Myung Dynasty. In this era, the Southern School began to be popular in Chosun. The leading calligrapher of Chosun in this era was Han Ho. Accordingly, the calligraphic style of Lee Soon-Shin s Nanjungilgi is similar to Han Ho s style. However, we can find the elements of the Northern School in Nanjungilgi more than in Han Ho s style. This reflects his personality based on sternness and sharpness. Moreover, he arranges very closely the letters; therefore, we can feel somewhat suffocating in his writings. This may be resulted from the fact that he is not a professional calligrapher. However, this may also reflect his personality which is conservative and careful, not like the unrestrained mind. This kind of conjecture about Lee Soon-Shin s personality is proved through the contents of his diary. By analysing the contents of the diary, I could summarize his personality as the three main characters; conservativeness and sternness, sharpness and acuteness, and sensitiveness and carefulness. This is very interesting because his calligraphic style reflects these characters. It can evoke some problems to summarize the personality as the three characters only through the calligraphic style. However, I could do it through the contents of his diary reflecting his personality well. I hope that this study will be useful to understand Lee Soon-Shin in the various aspects.
