Hydrogen producing granules (HPGs) are discrete well-defined and self-immobilized aggregates formed by cell-to-cell attraction. Compared to conventional microbial flocs, HPGs have regular, dense, and strong structure with excellent settleability, enabling high biomass concentration, and withstand high organic loading. The physical properties of HPGs are directly related to process performance since they could directly influence not only substrate and nutrient transportation into HPGs but also maintenance of biomass concentration inside the reactor. To elucidate the morphological characteristics of HPGs, various researches have been conducted. However, previous researches dealt with only limited number of HPGs (less than 500 samples) due to difficult and tedious analyzing process of HPGs. In this study, for the first time, CMEAIS image analysis software (freely available online program) was applied to scrutinize the morphological characteristics (size, roundness, width/length etc.) of HPGs based on more than 6,000 samples. During experiment, firstly, the performance of control HPGs and ultrasonicated HPGs were monitored and then their morphological characteristics were intensively analyzed. The experimental results showed that ultrasonicated resulted in not only higher hydrogen yield but also bigger and rounder shape of granules. The results shown in this abstract are preliminary and more detailed discussion will be delivered at the conference.
