문자의 첫 모습부터 오늘날 모습까지

국문 초록

문자는 사물의 모양을 본뜨는 것으로부터 시작됐는데, 이러한 그림글 자는 그 수가 지속적으로 늘어나거나 그 해석의 자의성으로 말미암아 뜻을 전달 하기가 어려워졌고, 이를 극복하기 위해 모양 대신 그 모양을 특정한 문양 또는 기호로 변환한 쐐기꼴 글자 체계가 등장했다. 이 쐐기글자는 인류의 글자 문명에큰 고비로서 서로 다른 문화의 사람들끼리도 그것으로 소통할 수 있게 해 주었다. 사용의 급증은 마침내 그림글자의 한계를 완전히 뛰어넘어 사람의 말소리 자체를 적을 수 있는 소리글자가 창안되는 계기가 되었는데, 이때 결정적 수단이 바로 ‘레부스(rebus) 문자’의 출현이었다. 그 뒤부터 인류는 말과 이야기 그리고 토론 그리고 역사적 기록 등을 자유롭게 글자로 적어 후대로 전승할 수 있게 되었다. 오늘날 사람의 글자는 1,032개로서 대개가 소리글자이지만, 그 가운데 주로 쓰이는 글자는 18개에 그친다. 나머지 글자는 사실상 소멸의 길을 걷고 있다. 이 논문은 문자가 태어났을 때의 첫 모습부터 오늘에 이르기까지의 모습을 그 주요한 단계에서 보여주고자 한다.

영문 초록

The earliest scripts were mostly based on pictographs using the pictures which resemble what objects signify. As the number of pictographic writings in use gradually increased, however, it became more and more difficult for pictograms to convey exact meaning of each one, with much higher possibility of their being arbitrarily interpreted. This was credited for the occurrence of cuneiform as an alternative, which featured simplified and more abstract pictorial representations. The ability of cuneiform to express ideas had its own significance of making communications among people from different cultures possible. Its radical increase led to the evolution of writing system from pictographic to phonographic one that can deal with people s spoken language. Central was the Rebus mechanism, which most of historical phonographic systems relied on. Since then, thanks to the principle, primitive societies were able to produce the records of legends, folk tales, history, discussions and so on in written language to their next generation. Currently, it is considered that approximately 1,032 written language systems exist around the world, most of which are phonographic. Among them, it is only 18 written systems that can be pointed out to be frequently used and the rest of them are considered to be forced to extinction, losing its native speakers. In this sense, this study aims to examine the history of scripts by major aspects and phases, from the earliest style to the current one.
