국문 초록

이 연구는 한국 초등학생들의 학원교육 경험을 학년별로 묘사하고 그들이 학원교육 경험에 대해 가지는 의미가 무엇인지를 살펴보기 위한 목적으로 수행했다. 실상 한국 대부분의 초등학생들은 학교에 입학하는 순간부터 학원도 입학하게 되고, 초등학교를 졸업하는 순간까지도 여전히 학원과 함께 하는 경우가 많다. 결론적으로 한국에서는 학원교육이 교육문화에서 중요한 역 할을 담당하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 학원교육을 받는 당사자인 이들 학생들에 대해 살펴볼 수 있는 기회는 전무하다. 하지만, 한국 초등학생들에게 학원이란 더 이상 선택이 아닌 필수적인 관문으로 여겨지고 있고, 이들 학원교육이 전 세계적으로 관심을 받고 있는 한국교육의 중요한 일부분이라는 점에서 이에 대한 연구가 더욱 필요하다. 이에 과연 한국의 학원들은 어떠한 특성을 지니며 어떠한 교육과정을 운영하고 있고, 초등학생들이 학원이라는 교육공간에서 어떠한 생각을 하고 어떠한 교육적 경험을 하고 있는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이러한 목적에 따라서 본격적인 논의는 다음과 같은 흐름에 따라 전개해 나갈 것이다. 먼저, 우리나라 초등학생들 중 학원교육을 경험하는 학생을 어느 정도가 되는지, 그리고 어떤 학원교육을 받고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 뒤이어, 한국의 초등학생들의 학원교육 경험들이 학년별로 어떤 특징이 있는지, 그리고 만약 차이가 있다면, 왜 그런 차이가 생기는지를 학교 교육과의 연관성 속에서 찾아보고자 한다. 아울러, 이렇게 학년에 따른 다양한 학원 경험들을 실제 학원 및 학생들에 대한 질적 연구를 통해 세부적으로 묘사하고자 하였다. 또한 이들이 학원에 부여하는 의미가 무엇인지를 함께 살펴보고자 하였다. 일련의 과정은 한국초등학생들이 경험하는 학원경험에 대해 상세히 살펴볼 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 학교 교육 현장과 더불어 교육행정가, 교사, 그리고 교육학자에게 던지를 시사점에 대해서도 생각해볼 수 있는 기회로 작용할 것이다.

영문 초록

Hakwon education has been very popular and major part of Korean students’ learning and lives. At the same time, it plays an important role in understanding Korean education and sociocultural atmosphere. But there is not enough research on Hakwon education to take a deep look into it. Within this context, this paper was to scrutinize the characteristics of Korean students’ learning experiences in Hakwon education in chronological look and to identify the elementary school students’ viewpoint on their Hakwon experience. For this purpose, qualitative study methods were employed. In order to describe and understand how Hakwon education is operated, a variety of qualitative data collection methods such as participant observation, intensive interviewing and content analysis have been implemented for almost a year long field work study. Through these field-oriented methods, researchers were able to collect qualitative data to extensively show what kinds of features of Korean Hakwon education for elementary school students have in regard to curriculum, materials and teaching methodology in the concept of chronological steps. Also we were able to better understand the elementary school students’ thoughts and perspective on Hakwon experience. The discussion continued to evolve in the following phases. First, we clarified how much students took Hakwon education classes in Korea and what kind of education were provided in Hakwon. Subsequently, we described how the students got different aspects of educational experience by their school grade. And if we discerned any type of differences in that, we probed to find out the reasons in association with the public school curriculum and system. In addition, we described detailed learning experiences in a variety of Hakwons through a qualitative study of actual Hwakwon institutions and students. In addition, we examined what Hakwon means to elementary school students with no preconception involved. A series of follow-up courses can take us to a detailed look into the life of students in Hwakwon and will serve as an important opportunity for on-site school administrators and teachers to get to know the alternative way to overcome the school crisis and problems.
